I believe I was 4 the first time I heard the name "Jay Gatsby."
It had been during the summer months of 1924, at my aunt Jordan's home.
I had been drawing when I overheard a conversation that would prove to have much more weight than I originally believed.
"It'll be two years now, in a month."
"Aunt Jordan, was Uncle Nick...did he love Gatsby?"
"...yes, I do think Nick loved Gatsby."
"...did you love Uncle Nick?" She shook her head.
"Only as friends." She looked away from me, back at the Sound and the afternoon sky. "I could empathize with him. I understood how it felt."
She got out a locket, rusted from years of exposure to the elements, one I recognized as the matching piece of my mother's.
She opened it and inside was, indeed, a photo of my mother.
And suddenly, it all made sense.
"...my God, it has been 20 years, hasn't it?"
