Mèng Yáo stops typing and looks up at him, perplexed. “I beg your pardon?”
“I’m trying to do my hacker voice.”
“Your what?”
“Like in the movies? When somebody’s hacking into the Pentagon, and then they crack the firewall or whatever and they’re like I’m in?”

Jiāng Chéng just scoffed “What are the fucking chances that you would just pick this building randomly? God, as if I didn’t see enough of you growing up, just because our mothers are fri—” Jiāng Chéng stopped, apparently frozen in the midst of the same realisation Jīn Zǐxuān was having.
“Oh.”
“Fuck me, are they serious? Jesus Christ, how did this even—fuck, you didn’t choose this place yourself, did you.”
Jīn Zǐxuān felt like he was being insulted, but he didn’t understand how. He bristled anyway. “I didn’t.”
“Great. Fucking amazing, our mothers want us to be best buds, is that it? Or are they just hoping we’ll snitch on each other?”
Jīn Zǐxuān’s earlier conversation echoed in his mind. “I think they were hoping we’d—look after each other.”-
Jīn Zǐxuān is a human disaster, and though Jiāng Chéng would quite happily watch his childhood nemesis burn his fingers off taking a tray out of the oven because he's never heard of oven mitts before, somehow he finds himself helping him out again and again. Probably just an instinct from years of keeping Wèi Yīng alive though.

“Qing-jie,” Wēn Cháo called, laughing; Wang Língjiao at his side was positively cackling, tears in her eyes. “We found you a husband to match you, Qíng-jie – look at him, a perfect fit for you: beautiful and useless! Say ‘thank you, Wēn-gōngzĭ’.”
Jiāng Chéng might be beautiful, underneath the tears and the blood that covered him, the ruin of his chest and back, the bruises that stained his flesh, but his eyes were empty and dull – as dead as the golden core inside of him that was no more. That wasn’t something her medicine could fix, even if Wēn Cháo would be inclined to let her try.
“Thank you, Wēn-gōngzĭ,” Wēn Qíng said politely. “Do you want me to take him out of your sight?”

Huan-ge stops right in the middle of the poem he is reading aloud from the now very battered and well-loved book Mèng Yáo had given him for his eighteenth birthday. “Ah...”
Mèng Yáo sighs and sinks lower in the bubble bath. “I take it by your expression that either you ordered me another birthday gift that you forgot about until just now, or that we are being interrupted.”

And if you won’t believe that, consider all the mere mortals who will be on the road with you, just waiting to crash into your blind spot.”
“I’m not the one who thinks he’s infallible,” Niè Míngjué grumbled. “Spending four days in a car with you is not going to lessen the chances of a roadside fatality, Mèng Yáo.”
“Do you think I don’t feel the same? By all means, please tell me you were only planning to go alone because you were being arrogant and not because everyone you know is unavailable for a road trip Christmas week.” Niè Míngjué was silent. “That’s what I thought.”

Lán Huàn is stuck at the airport at Christmas, and Mèng Yáo and Niè Míngjué have to put their bitterness aside long enough to go and pick him up.
