Society collapsed after a mysterious virus ravaged Earth's sentient population, killing most, mutating some, and leaving a rare few unscathed.
Kanaya Maryam has been travelling alone for the two years since her own experience with the plague. But for the past half-a-year she's been chasing down the source of a broadcast, not to mention the somewhat charming personality behind it, in the hopes of changing that state of affairs. Now, at last, she's nearly found it.
She just has to figure out where in this confounding city it's coming from. But it's hard when she keeps getting distracted by far too friendly wildlife, an assortment of bizzare but non-lethal traps (pranks? defenses?), and the disconcerting stares of a puppet audience that seems to only grow bigger every time she looks away.
What, exactly, has she gotten herself into?
For everyone who read Being A Brother Is Hard As Hell and wondered what the fuck Bro and D did...here's your answer.

This gets him punched.
By a cute guy.

"How many times had she prayed to the universe - sending her pleas out on the tails of passing comets - to let them win this? To keep Rose safe? To please please let her friends - her family - make it back to her? How many times had she prayed - had all of them prayed - for a happy ending, just this once? How hard had they all worked to reach for that ending?
And none of it worth a damn."

"They wouldn't be able to focus on this class period. Not as keyed up as they were now. But they couldn't afford to be like this all day. So they did what they always did when trying to ignore the shitty hand fate dealt them on any given occasion and focused on digging up the bright side of things.
One: They'd likely saved someone's life, or at least kept them from getting grievously injured.
Two: No broken bones, which is more than they could say for some other notable instances.
Three: They hadn't lost their lunch or wallet when they'd dropped their phone.
Four: They didn't get blamed for causing the accident
Five: Since so many bad things happened this morning, it probably maxed out their hypothetical Bad Luck Meter. Which must mean the rest of the day would be smooth sailing.
If they stretched number five, Ruby could even almost believe this morning just meant they were going to get hit with a stroke of good luck later in the day.
Wishful thinking? Absolutely.
Was that about to stop them from hoping? Not a chance."

She doesn't act with forethought very often, not since before. It's made her reckless. This time, it may have put her in serious trouble. Sapphire steals without thinking, and Ruby shoots her.
