Caitlyn's long-since settled into a socially advantageous marriage and is excellent at appearing satisfied with her lot in life. Her first act of rebellion in years - skipping the grandest gala of the season - puts her in the path of Vi, a Zaunite with debts to pay and scores to settle.

“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”*
Half a decade into Vi's stay in Stillwater, a topsider turns up, raving about being a Councillor's daughter.

Caitlyn snaps her fingers. She actually snaps her fucking fingers and Vi falls silent. She doesn’t know who this woman thinks she is, doesn’t understand how Caitlyn Kiramman gets her brain to stop firing with a few scattered insulations and a scowl in her voice. Vi slides a leg along the mattress, trying to centre herself.

“So,” Caitlyn starts, a little rehearsed, like she might be nervous, too. “I have to know. What kind of bet do you have to lose to end up at a community crocheting class on a Tuesday evening?”
Vi slumps in her seat, considering her options. She can come up with a story on the fly, that’s no challenge, but she’s always found lying the least interesting form of conversation. Lifting her straw from her drink and shaking the last stubborn drops off, Vi dumps it on the table and takes a few swigs directly from the cup.
