"Wei-gongzi? Wake up! Why won't he wake up? Wei Wuxian!"

Wei Wuxian's consciousness comes back as a slow rushing of sound. Voices, movement, something that sounds like fire crackling. It flickers behind his eyelids, so chances are, it's probably a fire. Then a shadow falls over him and he groans as he attempts to peel his eyes open. It's not an easy business—they somehow feel both dry and sticky at the same time, and when he manages to open them the tiniest bit, even the dim light around him feels like blinding sunlight. There's pressure in his chest, but at least his breathing is fine.

He has no idea what happened.

OR, Wei Wuxian finds himself in a pickle--and it involves Lan Wangji.

    Summary

The end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century on the South China Sea was defined by trade companies, the issuing and lifting of the sea bans, and the pirates, among them the captains Lianfang-zun and Wei Wuxian. First, I will introduce the topic by giving a brief overview of piracy on the South China Sea and the VOC in the seventeenth, eighteenth centuries. These pirates are less prominent than Zheng Yisao or Zheng Zhilong, which means there is less literature on this era of priacy. The research focus shifts to trade companies and hongs, so I will rely on the literature of earlier and somewhat later periods, too. I will follow that up with an outline of the background of the fleets relevant to these figures and about the life of these captains, starting with the resistance to Wen Ruohan’s confederacy efforts, otherwise known as the Sunshot Campaign, and ending with the disappearance of Wei Wuxian and Lianfang-zun. Finally I will survey our sources and analyse the portrayals in contemporary and in some later sources.

Wei Wuxian drops his hand, leans one shoulder into the stunted door frame. “Oh. Okay. So. Why are you here, exactly?”

“The Institute sent me to assist you,” the ridiculously beautiful cardigan owner says, “as your familiar.”

Wei Wuxian laughs as if it’s a joke, although the man’s stony expression makes it clear that any humor gleaned from him is likely unintentional.

“Well, uh, I appreciate your,” Wei Wuxian says, “you know, time, but everything is under control here, actually.”

With impeccable timing, a tea-kettle sound keens from the kitchen, followed by a contained bang.

Or: Wei Wuxian is a witch, Lan Wangji is sent to be his familiar. They figure it out.
