Eddie would have given anything to be on his own right now. Instead, he was in the company of his rather observant, and very outspoken, child, who had sadly just witnessed the full-on disaster that had occurred in their hallway. Just kill him now.
A giggle. “Dad, you kissed Bucky!”
Yep. Just kill him right now.
Eddie accidentally kisses Buck goodbye, and spirals in the way only these boys could.
Buck scrubs a hand down his face. He’s got no idea what he’s supposed to do here.
He knows what his parents are like. He has his own childhood to draw from, and Isaac doesn't deserve that. He deserves to grow up surrounded by love, and if nothing else, Buck can give him that.
But Buck is also a twenty-six year old probationary firefighter, living in his girlfriend’s apartment while she travels the world. He’s not exactly in a position to look after a kid.
“Okay.” It comes out in a rush of air. “I’m gonna come get you."
“The one on the kitchen floor,” Carla said. She was packing her stuff up, shot him a soft smile. “Chris said you must’ve meant to post it on your way to work?”
“I know Buck’s address by heart,” Chris said proudly. “I wrote it down myself.”
Eddie blinked. “Oh,” he said.
Athena went to the ambulance, where the paramedic had just finished cleaning up the good samaritan’s bloody nose. The man was barely in his twenties, with curly, dirty blond hair and bright blue eyes. The mark on his eyebrow turned out to be a birthmark and not an injury, though given the mess of the man’s nose, it was an easy assumption to make. His button-up shirt was no longer light blue, instead stained with blood.
“You “Buck”?” The sergeant asked him, getting the man’s attention.
“Uh, I-I’m Evan Buckley, ma’am,” he said. Athena gave him a look down her glasses, and the boy seemed to shrink under her gaze. In an instant, Athena’s heart softened.
“Heard you did a good thing tonight, Evan,” she said as she reached for her cuff keys in her pocket and leant forward to undo the cuffs on his wrists. Once his hands were free, Evan rubbed at his wrists and then began to prod at his nose. “Don’t touch that,” Athena gently ordered, and Evan’s hands fell.
Athena and Michael adopted Evan Buckley officially on the 27th of December, 2014, but the reason why they did so started six months earlier.
Buck was about 10 minutes away from the firehouse when his phone pinged.
"Message from Eddie Diaz," Hildy's too-smooth voice announced, and Buck laughed at how Eddie's face would scrunch at Hildy knowing his business.
"Wait in your car when you get here. I need to talk to you before we go in"
