He's surprised to realize that Ivanova is still standing next to him, arms crossed, hips leaning against the railing. As if she has nothing better to do. As if she's the kind of person who waits, and he's the kind of person she waits for.

Summary
In which Tupo comes of age and struggles with the Laru tradition of choosing one's own gender, Pei stops by Gora for ship repairs, and Ouloo does what she does best: fretting about her child.
-
'The Laru way was meant to avoid children worrying about gender until they were old enough to choose, but perhaps Ouloo hadn’t spoken to Tupo about it enough. It had been so easy for Ouloo herself, she had known for quite some time that she was a woman before she changed her pronouns and identifiers, it had always felt like she had been waiting until she was old enough to be sure. Of course neither she nor Tupo had grown up around many other Laru, so she had always just assumed that what had happened to her was what happened commonly to everyone. Perhaps she had been a little presumptive there.' -

The crowd murmured and shifted. Drew Summers turned, meeting the gaze of one person, and then the next. Makepeace Royse, a giant of a man in plain dress, called out, “For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. Exodus, 9:14.”
“Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon,” called out David Hutchinson.
“Hell is empty,” shouted out Widow Dellacroix. “All the devils are here.”
