In which there is a birthday, and a rescue is staged.

Several months after everything, she turned fourteen the same way she turned thirteen: drinking tea in her parents’ house.

She paused. “Also, you should know, there are people coming this way. A lot of people.”

“Alright, cheer later,” he said, pulling her along. “Run now.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she said, ambling along next to him. “So, tell me. Does Uncle know you abandoned the Fire Nation to sell tea again?”

Something about his resolute silence told her that this would be an excellent adventure.

Okay, the description of what happened at Ba Sing Se sums into words what I was thinking as I watched it, because no matter what if you see your younger sibling cornered by people with weapons...then no one is going to be calm about it. And Zuko is fundamentally an emotional person. I don't get the hate for the Ba Sing Se episodes because I can't see it as going any other way even if we, as viewers, wish otherwise.

“Katara is a master waterbender.” He said, Sokka’s discerning frown dropped, caught off guard by the apparent non sequitur. “In fact, I don’t think it’s an understatement to call her the most experienced combative waterbender in the world.” The Northern Water Tribe was holed away in their city, Zhao had been able to cut through the warriors, waterbender and non-bender both, like snow. He was focused on Sokka so he didn’t see the surprised then smug expression that crossed Katara’s face. “Now, imagine you arrived to find her cornered by Azula and Ozai.”

No one seemed to understand then Aang got it. “That’s what you saw.” He said. “Your little sister facing down a master waterbender and the Avatar.” Sokka went vaguely green. A strange look passed over Katara’s face.

    Summary

Chit Sang survives the earthbender ambush by the skin of his teeth. His brothers- and sisters-in-arms aren’t so lucky. He’s not an officer. He’d just been one of the few experienced firebenders detached to work with the new recruits of the 41st Division and show them the ropes.
It was just supposed to be milk runs until the kids got some rust on their armor.
    What a shitshow.
    What a spirits-damned shitshow.

    Chit Sang burns.

    Summary

“It’s healing really well.” Katara tells him with a smile, before her lips quirk down into a frown. “Though it’ll still scar pretty bad.”

Zuko shrugs. “It’s ok. I doubt people will really focus on it anyway… the one on my face is a bit more prominent.”

Katara makes a face, like she’s not quite sure if she should laugh or frown, when Toph speaks up.

“You have a scar on your face?” Toph asks, sitting up so she’s sitting by his legs rather than lying on them.

Zuko blinks. He never quite forgets that Toph is blind, but the fact that she can’t see his scar never really occurred to him.

“Oh, yeah.” Zuko looks down at his lap. “My father burned like, half my face off before I was banished.” He says it a little too casually, probably not bitterly enough.

A crash next to him makes him look up, to see Katara's horrified expression, and a shattered bowl of water at her feet.

No one says anything for a long moment.

“Zuko… it- your dad?” Katara finally manages to gasp out. Zuko blinks at her, his brain moving slowly.

“You didn’t know?” He asks in genuine surprise.

    “No.” Sokka wheezes.

Zuko blinks at him. “Oh.” Is all he can manage to say.

    Summary

Iroh often wonders how a child raised as Zuko was- in pain and rage and cold indifference- could turn out the way he did- kind and gentle and just.

    Iroh often discounts himself.

Or: how Zuko came to realize that a father’s love shouldn’t need to be earned.
