Stede decided to teach him numbers first. Ed thought it was stupid. I can already count, mate, he grumbled, which was apparently the point. Something about working with what was already there and finding comfort in the familiar or whatever.
“So this squiggle here is a nine, right?”
Stede nodded encouragingly.
“And these four other squiggly bits together… are also a nine?” Ed eyed him suspiciously, but Stede just nodded with renewed fervour.
Ed wanted to scream.

Ed notices a book in Stede's library with Stede's handwritten notes in it. All of a sudden, he really wants to learn how to read. Stede is all too happy to help. Takes place post-ep 6 and onwards.

Ed can’t stop thinking about Stede’s question as he hangs up the phone: how are we going to stay friends?
Ed had answered honest. I guess we’ll do what we always do. You can call if you miss me.
Before the line has been dead for a few seconds, the phone in his hand starts ringing. “Um,” Ed says, “didn’t we just say goodbye?”
And even though Stede is somewhere else entirely, Ed can hear the smile in his voice as he answers like it’s the most obvious thing in the world: “I missed you.”
