    Summary

“Did you ever dream you had a friend? Someone to last your whole life and you his. I suppose such a thing can’t really happen outside sleep.”
    ― E.M. Forster, Maurice

     1925, Shopshire:

WW1 has left James Fitzjames as the only heir to the Gambier title. When his estranged father dies he must reluctantly leave behind a life of decadence and freedom in 1920s London to take over the remote stately home he grew up in. Luckily his childhood best friend Solomon Tozer (now the local stone mason) is pleased to see him.

Shades of Maurice, Brideshead Revisited and The Go-Between. Probably ended up a lot more Ken Russell than Merchant Ivory.

    Summary

Francis has no particular need of care, no particular desire to have fingers brush his face or person as though he were something breakable and sacred, a temptation and a promise all at once.

    No particular desire.

Which is just as well, all things considered.

Or rather, considering one specific thing: that the man in his bed is James Fitzjames.

Tozer shows up to surprise Fitzjames and gets more than he bargained for. It's all very casual.

    Summary

He lived with false teeth and weakened eyes and sorely troubled sleep, but James could say, as he strode westwards, that he had never been so content as he was now. Save this: he worried about Francis. Ceaselessly.

    Summary

There could be no more terrible crime than to kill someone who is not merely a fellow human being but a close friend. Yet surely someone who kills a tyrant, however close friends the two men have been, has not committed a crime. At any rate the people of Rome do not think so, since they regard that deed which was done as the most splendid of all noble actions.
