“I’m a freelancer,” Joe said, “I work as a sexual health educator, do some graphic design stuff and take art commissions. Booker and I both saw the flyers Andy and Quỳnh had put out for a social soccer team, and we ended up at tryouts on the same day.” Booker had shuffled onto the field as if he expected to be yelled at and chased away at any moment, Joe recalled. “It took him a while to open up, but we really bonded after a few weeks and now he’s one of my closest friends.”
“Only a friend?” Nicky asked.
“Only a friend,” Joe confirmed. “He’s dating Nile; I thought you knew that?”
Nicky smiled, the lopsided angle impossibly winsome. “It doesn’t hurt to make sure.”
Heartbroken after once again falling too hard, too fast, Joe swore off relationships for a full year, refocusing his energies on work, faith and friends. Nine months into his self-imposed dating ban, he meets Nicky. As they get to know each other, both on and off the soccer field, Joe must decide if the risk of falling back into old habits outweighs this chance at a happily ever after.

“I’m sorry?”
“Just a few months, maybe a year, if that. Just to make sure you don’t do anything foolish.” he continued. “We don’t exactly stick together for too long. People will notice.”
“You’re telling me that you’ve all been alive for centuries, but you’ve all done it separately?”
“No. Not always.”
“But then what, people noticed?”
The look he gave her was answer enough.
Considering all Nile knew about immortality was what she’d learned from the movies, she was inordinately disappointed to say that it was a bust. Now, fresh from her own murder, she’s been thrust into a life she didn’t want, and surrounded by a group of people that will call themselves anything but family. Annoyingly enough, they aren’t too forthcoming with answers. Why was she dreaming of pale hands and cold water? Where was Quynh? Who was Nicky? What happened 100 years ago?
And most importantly: why did the three of them think it was their own fault, and what don’t they want the others to know?

Yusuf never forgets the roses.
Anytime he steers up the winding drive to the Mill Neck house, he double, then triple checks his mental tally before killing the engine outside the garage. Keys, wallet, leather satchel, cover story, gun stowed in the false drink compartment, his keys once again, then tucking the flowers safely under his elbow. Then and only then was it safe to exit the vehicle.
The Almighty help him if he ever left the bushel of flowers to wilt on the passenger seat again. He would be the first agent in history ever taken out by his cover story.
