Basically Caliborn is in foster care, but his twin sister has stayed hidden, living on the street and visiting him when his door is locked and his window is open. God knows why, he's a huge dick to her. She convinces him to go and have drinks with Dirk Strider, the guy down the street. Confusion ensues.

It was always Karkat's destiny to change Alternia for the better. At the tender age of 8 sweeps he accomplished just that. Disguised as a lime blood, he gained the favor of the Condesce and set in motion a glorious and thorough reform. But the world still has its problems, and not everyone is happy about what Karkat did. Years later, after being kicked off the police force, Karkat is a private investigator. It doesn't pay well, but someone's gotta keep the gangs in line. He's lucky to have people like Eridan and Nepeta to help him out, though sometimes he wonders just where their loyalties lie.

He drops the night light and plunges the room into darkness aside from the blinding white from the phone. He can barely feel the burn of the light as he taps away at the screen, looking for evidence. Evidence that his budding theory is bullshit.
It’s no good. He finds nothing to rule out his hypothesis. He stands from his floor, takes the nightlight, therefore illuminating the room in a soft, golden glow again, and walks over to his closet. He throws the door open and lets in a shuddery breath.
It’s his middle school uniform. He’s gone back in time. To four months before the entrance exams.
