Now, though, Adora was on top of her, and her chest heaved in a way that was decidedly not sleepy. She pleaded with Catra with her eyes, then her words, “Please, I just-” before cutting off, not knowing what to even ask for.

    “Let’s make a bet.”

Catra straightened, ears perking up. She liked bets. She liked winning them.

“If we win the game tonight, you’ll go to the dance with me tomorrow.”

Laughter ripped from Catra’s throat. She tossed her head back, fangs bared in open-mouthed giggles. “Wow, you really don’t want to go with me. The Rebels kick our asses every year.”

“That’s not true!” Indignation sparked and died in Adora’s blue eyes. “Well, we almost had them last year.”

“Almost isn’t winning, Adora. Besides, if we don't win,” asked Catra, shuffling to fit her arms into the sleeves of Adora’s letterman as discreetly as possible, “what’s in it for me?”

Adora blinked. “What do you want?”

    You.

Not that she was stupid enough to say that.

    ______________

In just a year, high school senior Catra has overcome everything the universe managed to throw at her — a manipulative parent, a broken system, a ruined friendship. If only she could get over something as stupid as a crush.

    Summary

“We should have something that’s ours, you know?”

And Catra can’t fight her on that. It’s been years since the war, but old habits die hard, and Adora is still learning how to be selfish. How to just say no when she wants to, sleep when she needs to, let go of her burdens when they weigh her down. She gets better day by day. And if Adora wants to build something of her own from the ground up, so be it. It’s not in her nature to do things the easy way.

Catra laces their fingers together. She kisses the back of Adora’s hand. “I’m in.”

    Summary

They stay that way for a long time, Catra’s face tucked into Adora’s shoulder, Adora gently cradling Catra’s head. Adora is careful not to hug Catra too hard or make her feel restrained, anticipating the moment that Catra will start to pull away — but Catra doesn’t. She hangs on so tightly it hurts, her claws digging through Adora’s jacket and into her back, latching into her like she did when she was a kitten and didn’t know how much her claws could hurt. Adora tries not to wince, tries not to move a single muscle, worried that if she does the spell will break and Catra will struggle away, appalled at having shown weakness.

But Catra doesn’t let go. And so neither does Adora.

Lord Catra isn’t what Adora expected.

For instance, she’s not a man. The stories don’t talk about that part.
