Yiling Laozu was dead, and the cultivation world rejoiced. Now it was time to rest and finally heal the wounds left by the Sunshot Campaign.
In their absence, the countryside grew more dangerous with each passing day. Rogue cultivators stepped in soon enough. Rumour had it that amongst them, there was one who went where no one else dared to go, all but for a place to sleep and a meal for his children. Rumour had it a crow rode on his shoulder. Rumour had it he disappeared into the shadows whenever someone so much as mentioned the four great Sects.
Rumour had it he was a ghost.

Lan Wangji is not the same after Wei Wuxian dies, but Lan Xichen thinks that perhaps he just needs time to mourn; at least, until Wangji disappears without a trace.
Years later, the common people speak with fondness and reverence of a wandering cultivator dressed in black and red who helps those in need and avoids the cultivation sects like they carry a plague.
The cultivation world is, understandably, a tad alarmed.

“Young Master Wèi,” the healer tells him, “I’m afraid to say that you’ve been cursed.”
He laughs, it’s not exactly the first time that has happened, “Is that it? What kind of curse is it?”
“It’s a lover’s curse.”
“A lover’s curse? That’s ridiculous! It’s not like I’ve ever...” He falters a bit, “I mean, I don’t see how that could apply to me.”
The look she gives him is pitying, “It’s not that kind of lover’s curse, Young Master Wèi. This curse… It only affects people who suffer from one-sided love.”
