“Danielle? Danielle, are you listening?” Dani came back to herself. Judy looked at her with bemused concern. “Where were you, honey?”
“Sorry, yes, I just...” Dani trailed off again, gaze fixed out the window, and the churchyard outside. A bird landed on a statue of the Virgin Mary before spreading its wings and vanishing into the blue sky, another bird flying alongside it. Free.
“Realized you are about to become Mrs. O'Mara?”
Dani fought back the wave of dread rising inside her like floodwater. “Yeah.”

The entire way there, she wanted to scream at them: stop the car, this is a terrible mistake! But she couldn’t. She couldn’t do that. Not to Eddie. Not to Judy.
Judy’s face broke into an overwhelming expression of joy, eyes sparkling, and face beaming, and Dani knew she made the right choice.
“I can’t wait!”
She smoothed down the silk bodice and rested her hands against her rolling stomach. At least one of them was excited.

There is still the phantom catch of water in her lungs, still faces forming in the shadows of the room at her peripherals; ghosts there, waiting with grasping hands – but the inevitably of capture feels impossible in light of Jamie’s certainty. Jamie who, after stepping through the doorway, knows without looking that Dani will follow.

Owen drops his head, hand clutching his heart. "That was only once, but yes, we'd all fall into oblivion without Hannah. My bigger point, and what I'm asking, though, is what talent might you have to offer?"
Outside of wrangling fourth graders, the only thing Dani's ever managed to accomplish is making coffee with just a pan, tap water, and near expired k-cups after her Keurig broke, so. "I'm really great at making coffee," she says, hopeful.
"You had me at I'm really great," Owen smiles, "the coffee is a bonus. I'll show you to your room."
