They each pick a little plastic child to be their token in the game, and Patrick offers to explain the rules, but Alexis waves him off, grabbing a card from the pile. There’s a loud pop as she does so and then… pink smoke? Then a sweet smell, like cotton candy, or bubble gum, maybe, and for a moment, David can’t see anything.
“Um. Was that supposed to happen?” he hears Alexis say, followed closely by Stevie muttering, “What the fuck?” As the smoke clears, David has to agree with her, because, seriously, what the fuck?

Summary
David loses a bet and gets dragged to a road race where he meets a man he was convinced could not exist, who helps him hide from all of his problems and maybe even learn to save himself.
People are passing around them, have been for a bit now, but David doesn’t notice. He’s standing in the dank back lot of an old building, surrounded by degenerates of varying degrees, with liquor flowing and smokes toking, engines revving loud - growling like they’ve got live jaguars under-hood. And all he can see is this sassy asshole in front of him.
The look he gets in return weakens his knees, steady and sure, like the calm before a storm.
Maybe Patrick’s not unaffected after all.
