Nicolo captures a Mer off the coast of Genoa. It does not go the way he'd planned.“I’m trying to help,” Nicolo insists, “I spotted you not far from this cove two months ago, and then again this week. I doubt I’m the only one.”
“So, you decided to trap me, to warn me that others might want to do the same?”
Nicolo burns hotter still. He opens his mouth, before closing it again.
Laughter echoes in the cave, brittle and hollow. “That is, quite possibly, the stupidest plan I’ve ever heard.”
Nicolo resists the urge to press his lips together in a thin line, shame twinging in his throat. The sea crashes against the shoreline beyond the cove, a dull roaring in his ears.

Summary
Adam is about to lose his apartment. He can't bear the idea of leaving the only home he's known. Luckily, the building's super, Mr. Dalca, has a proposal: Marry his friend Nigel so that Nigel can get a Green Card and stay in the country. It's a simple deal - Adam won't even have to live with Nigel. But when the government starts checking on whether or not Adam's marriage is legit, he's forced to live with a husband he never wanted. Will they make it work? Or Will they kill each other?

“Safe from you,” Nigel says with a bitter laugh, “Might as well fucking indulge yourself. I’m dying anyway.”
The creature creeps forward a bit more, close enough for Nigel’s eyes to slowly adjust. A boy. A man.

The woman who changed him didn’t know any better. Adam tries to remember that it wasn’t her fault, even if it’s sometimes a bit more difficult to convince himself.She’d found him in the park, with his telescope. He’d kicked it over when he struggled, he’d heard it crack even over his own sobs as her teeth sank into his neck. She hadn’t even said hello. One minute, she’d been across the park, just another woman on a walk. Then the wind had turned, blown Adam’s scent to her, and she’d lunged.
