“Are you sure you’re not married?” Stede swallows.
Something is tickling the back of his mind, a memory or dawning realisation or the hangover exasperated by the flashing lights of Las Vegas spilling onto the dishevelled bed. Stede pulls at his left glove, alarm coiling in his gut.
Ed snorts in amusement. “Yeah I’m sure. I think I’d remember if I got hitched.”
“Would you?” Stede says shakily.
He holds his hand between them. Around his ring finger is a band matching Ed’s exactly. Brand new, without a single scratch on it, golden and lovely.

Blackbeard shifts his weight. He can’t seem to meet Lucius’s eyes, which is all right with Lucius, given that the last time they made eye contact Lucius was tossed into the sea and nearly died.
“I’m,” Blackbeard says. He lets out a breath. “I’m sorry for trying to kill you. I was taking my emotions out on you instead of dealing with them in a healthy way.”

Summary
“You still have ink here, did you know that?” Nicolò placed his middle finger just off-centre on Yusuf’s bottom lip. “From where you licked the nib of your pen, yesterday. I saw you do it, and I do not know what power in heaven kept me from falling on you then and there, abbot be damned.”
Yusuf smiled, quietly thrilling in the way Nicolò’s finger shifted against his lip with the movement. They were close enough that even in the dark, Yusuf could see Nicolò’s pupils dilate.
“I am tired of watching, Yusuf,” Nicolò said.
“That is unfortunate, my love, since we are promised to the monastery for the next four months.”
As rewarding as the complex art of monastic manuscript illumination can be, it can be rather isolating. Nicolò reaches his breaking point and if God has a problem with it, He can take it up with him later.
