But once the words came out, it cannot be stopped. “I never asked for you to come, I never asked for you to stay, I never asked for you to be here! If this city and this work is so abhorrent to you-” Dick turns to face the boy “-then you are free to go at any time!” he finishes with a yell.
He regrets the words the moment they came out, because the look on Damian’s face isn’t shock or anger. It’s acceptance.
Like Damian knows this is coming, and has been preparing himself for it.

Damian shakes his head. He can’t take it. He can’t take Richard hugging him, saying his name like it's the most precious thing that ever passes Richard’s mouth. Not when he knows what he’s about to say next.
But Damian has decided that he wants to be selfish. Just for now. Just before Richard figures out what he comes here to say and casts him away forever. He lets Richard hug him for another few seconds, all the while knowing that he is not deserving of it.
In a dark future, Damian is forced to kill Dick.

Perplexingly, it was Gen who broke the eerie silence inside the tent. He walked to the table at the center and placed a watch, one that Temenus recognized as one of Stenides’s work, on it. It was beautiful, and was Gen’s wedding gift from Sten. The green details, lovingly crafted against the gold background, showed the genius of Stenides’s mind upon forming patterns.
The watch, already precious before, was doubly so now, because there would never be anything quite like it ever again.
