Leonard McCoy writes novels after coming home from a brutal war that almost cost him his life. He's lost friends, his confidence and he's addicted. Addicted to the adrenaline rush he gets when his life is on the line and Spock is exactly the man to give him his fix. When there was no hope, Spock brings it back and he finds it most exhilarating.
Spock has always been alone, and he's always preferred to do everything alone. But when he meets Dr. McCoy, suddenly the job is so much fun, the cases are more interesting and he's handling people much better than he used to. Leonard sees something in him that Spock just doesn't see, and maybe he likes the way the doctor looks at him.
