“But have you ever heard of the Cuddle Sutra?”
Ned, Ariel and a bunch of the other guests frown a little. Finally, Ariel speaks.
“I have not heard of that, I’ll admit.”
Ned agrees.
Over the course of the next hour, Shane sees Kate explain the Cuddle Sutra, first when she is explaining it to others, then when she’s talking to Ryan and Shane.“So the Cuddle Sutra is a free PDF book created by Rob Grader and his wife, Karen, and it describes different ways of cuddling and non-sexual physical contact that couples can profit from.”
Shane can imagine the reaction shots of the other couples, most of them curious and eager. He has to admit, he feels similar about it and when he looks to his right, he sees that Ryan’s eyes are twinkling and he is smiling at Shane with that huge, wide smile that makes him so incredibly lovable and Shane’s heart softens.
“Alright!” He finally says, allowing excitement to pull him along. “Let’s do this, I wanna see what they did!”

“Don’t be such a silly little boy.”
Ryan’s shout of protest is halfway out of his throat when it gets stuck. His face flushes hot and something else coils under his belly button as he watches Shane turn away to grab his box again. His co-host is not looking back at Ryan, instead he takes long strides down the hallway with the props and Ryan nearly chokes trying to dislodge the remark in his throat. It’s nonsense. It’s unprecedented. It’s frankly ridiculous.
But Ryan, who up to this point was absolutely sure that he was comfortably straight, has the worst boner in his life since puberty.
And he is pretty sure that Shane’s comment is to blame for it.Fuck.

Summary
Insomnia isn’t exactly new to him, but usually it’s just his body signaling how tired and yet how incapable of falling asleep it is. Tonight, however, Ryan is kept awake by his own brain overthinking things. He’s used to overthinking, he even channels it into his work. Conspiracies, ghosts, cryptids and haunted spots need someone to look at them from all perspectives and think of any possible explanation. But right now, he’s not thinking about work or hobbies. He’s not even thinking about movies, about the upcoming Lakers games or his workout routine.
Instead, he’s thinking about how vast his bed actually is, how empty his hands feel curling around nothing but air and how incredibly hollow his chest feels. It’s almost as if someone plunged an ice-cream scoop into his chest, carved out his heart and other important insides and left him with a hole that threatens to cause his torso to cave in, crumble into itself and destroy him.
Ryan wraps his arms around himself, clutching to his own bicep with one hand and the shoulder with the other... and sighs. He’s exhaling until there is less space in his chest, less area to feel hollowed out.

“We’ll be fine,” Ryan repeats, still brandishing his sandwich in a threatening manner. “Just wait and see. Our kids are going to come back and grow up to be botanists and environmental conservationists.”
Annie, the music teacher, rolls her eyes. “Your kids are going to come back with poison ivy and heat stroke.”
Andrew protests, “They’ll be wearing long clothes! Because it’ll be sixty degrees! Which rules out heat stroke!”
Curly, a kindergarten teacher, nods unconvincingly. “Yup, I bet. We’ll be holding our breaths.”
When they all part to resume classes, Andrew stops and tells Ryan, “Don’t listen to them, man. We’re gonna rock this shit, and our kids are going to beg us to take them hiking every week. We’re gonna rock this shit.”
“I know we are. We’ll show the others just how totally rad and down with the kids we are, and how we can positively influence their outlook on Earth Science.”
Or, Ryan and Andrew, two fifth grade teachers, decide to take their students to a nature center for a field trip and end up falling head over ass in love the the park rangers assigned to accompany them, which doesn't bode well for either of their professional credentials
