“Well I’m going to run some errands,” David says, brushing a stray bit of fuzz off his navy blue sweater. “But we’re still on for birthday dinner?”
“Yeah,” Patrick nods. He’s pretty sure David knows the annual birthday surprise party stopped being a surprise after year two or three. David doesn’t even inflict fictional catastrophes on the café as a decoy anymore. But Patrick plays along anyway. In some ways their whole partnership is built on playing along.
OR David and Patrick have been business partners for a decade until, on Patrick's 40th Birthday, everything changes.

Patrick smiles indulgently. “So you and Alexis didn’t pretend to be lawyers so you could finagle your way into a meeting with Wendy and the Australian Blouse Barn people?”
“Um, technically, only Alexis pretended to be a lawyer. I just...didn't correct the Blouse Barn lady when she made the same assumption about me.”
Patrick nods and his eyes are so fond. “Why didn’t you tell me?"
David shrugs. “I told you Wendy gave me the money I used to start the store.”
“Yeah,” Patrick agrees. “But you made it sound like it was some kind of severance package or something. You didn’t tell me that you got her the money, and then she passed a fair chunk of it over to you.”
Or: Patrick learns how David really got the money and has feelings about it. Filth & Feelings and a gross misuse of office space ensue.

Summary
Patrick contemplates on his performance at Open Mic Night and David returns the favor. Just another Open Mic fic.
______Their noses are almost touching when they break apart and David looks a little wary but also extremely wanton. Patrick can’t get enough of David when he’s flushed and breathing heavy like this. He tweaks a nipple, rubbing over it with the pad of his thumb.
“So there’s something that I’d really like to do for you.” David starts. “To properly thank you.” His face is hopeful but guarded as he puts a hand on the side of Patrick’s face gently. “But I need you to be one hundred percent on board.”

Summary
The bad thing about being a world-famous contemporary artist is… actually, there are many bad things. The clout-chasers and users. The frenzied hoards of tabloid “reporters” and paparazzi vultures. The pressure from interviewers, curators, collectors, and art critics to pigeon-hole himself, or, at the very least, be consistent enough for them to do it for him. The neverending demands that he ascribe an approved meaning to his art. The elitist club at the very top of the art world pyramid, which David has never been a member of, what with his postmodern, mixed-media, performance piece style of art that in equal parts seems to shock and disgust and enthrall.
Or, an alternate universe where David is a famous, reclusive modern contemporary artist and Patrick is the art critic who is interviewing him about his new exhibition.
