Summary
I just had this little niggling crack fic idea and had to write it into the world. What if some extra mutagens and a big dose of magical torture broke Geralt's brainpan and he experienced visual hallucinations of his thoughts the way Deadpool does with his thought boxes (comic). Answer = this fic.

There was a pregnant pause during which Geralt breathed through his mouth to avoid the scent of blood and determinedly did not look at the yellow box in the air.*Eskel would have saved him.*
He caught the words out of the edge of his vision and physically flinched away from the condemnation. The white box was back, but the Witcher was done with humoring his hallucinations for one day.

Journey through Eskel's history as he struggles to figure out who he is, what he likes, and who he might love:
It started innocuously enough, huddled together facing the fire, Eskel’s bulkier body playing big spoon to Geralt’s lither frame. At sixteen years old with no real experience to speak of outside of his hand Eskel was startled to find his body reacting in ways he never realized it could to another man.
And that was how it started. If Eskel looked back seventy-odd years later, and tried to lay a finger on it, he would have said it was that hunt that opened his eyes to the fact that his tastes might not run the same as everyone else. He had felt off kilter at the revelation like he’d suddenly realized he didn’t fit in the world in yet another way. It would take him years, decades to find his center again.

“What happened to me?” he asked slowly, the last two words coming out weak and barely above a whisper.
“Is it okay if I come closer?” Steve asked, and he waited for the Soldier’s nod before walking to the nightstand and picking up the leather journal. “Best for you to hear it in your own words.”
When Steve held the journal out to him, he took it. It was clearly well-used. The cracked spine opened immediately to a page thick with small, loopy writing on one side and a photocopied picture pasted to the other. The Soldier studied the picture, dragging his fingers across the jawline of the serious-faced man in it, and then looked up at Steve. It was him. He was sure.
AU where HYDRA's torture had long-lasting effects on Bucky's brain. Every time Bucky starts to recover his memories, his brain, eventually, resets. Steve and Bucky have found a way to adjust to this and keep Bucky's life moving forward.

So here's the deal: after Cap goes into the ice, Peggy gets the serum.
In the seventies, she also gets Bucky.
By 2014, she and Bucky are semi-retired and frankly enjoying the hell out of life, their marriage, and the world in general, what with the no more brainwashing, SHIELD basically in okay, non-Hydra-infiltrated shape, and the Obama administration.
And then everyone learns that you can thaw Steve Rogers out of his ice block and after a quick blow-dry and a change of clothes, he'll basically be up and moving around, and everything gets considerably more interesting for everyone.
Including the problem of where to find a bed that fits the three of them.Some adventure, more domestic bliss. There's gonna be way more words about houseplants than about Nazis, and Steve couldn't be happier about this.
