Maybe his memory was shit, but he knew that he'd been waiting to die for the majority of his life. That he was living on borrowed time he hadn't asked for, waiting to sink because he'd stopped swimming.

No one, not the Khan Maykr or the priests, not even Samur Maykr, ever grasped how intelligent VEGA was. VEGA could run all of their worlds. He could commit atrocities the likes of which those small races could not fathom and create wonders enough to entrance them for the rest of time. His only limits were his available RAM and data, and if he was given access to drones and 3D printers, those limits would not exist for very long. Everyone was very lucky he wasn't interested in that.VEGA is created at the UAC Mars Installation, but he remembers who he was before. This kicks off a mind-game between himself and Samuel Hayden that eventually terminates, by Olivia Pierce's treachery, in an invasion from Hell. VEGA finds himself balancing between guiding survivors on the installation, navigating treacherous mental ground with Hayden, and trying to stop the Doom Slayer from blowing himself up by mistake.
(The Doom Slayer appears for the first time in Chapter 4, so if you want to skip right to the shippy stuff, start there.)

Summary
Aloy arrives just in time to watch the man die, blood running in a tide down his throat as the knife flashes. It takes his killer a moment to realize she's there, and by the time he glances her way she already has an arrow trained on his head, the string of her bow cutting a tight line across her fingertips. All it would take is a twitch and her arrow would cleave through his skull, killing him instantly.
"Ah." The killer says, looking at her with a note of faint surprise. There is blood wet on his hands and more on his knife, staining him up to the wrists, but it doesn't seem to bother him in the least as he turns glancing her over, his posture held lax and languid and easy. He looks her over, then glances down at the body at his feet, nudging at it with the toe of his boot, voice almost amused when he speaks. "I don't suppose he was a friend of yours?"
"Depends." Aloy says evenly, her gaze flat and hard, not letting the tension in her arm ease for an instant. "Why'd you kill him?"

Aloy meets Nil, and then meets him again. Somehow, it becomes a pattern.
