    Summary

Izaya, a kid, a junkie, high on the city and wanting to know everything more than he wanted to be safe. Shizuo imagines meeting him before he dyed his hair, and before Izaya got his knives, some awkward past made of still-drying clay that they could change without having to break it.

Starring: Izaya as the boy who had to grow up all on his own and grew sideways instead, and Shizuo, the angel of vengeance. In other words, the past takes a bite out of Izaya, and Shizuo reconsiders.

When Shizuo was small, he used to think that when you turn the tv off, the cartoons stop, paused, waiting for you to turn it back on the next day mid-sentence. For the longest time, he thought their tv was broken.

“Izaya doesn’t just goad you all over the city,” Shinra tells Shizuo over the hum of the news, stretched in Celty’s lap and philosophical. “You’re just too loud yourself to hear all the other people who yell his name on the streets,” he says, and Shizuo forgot it already, the disappointment of learning that when you turn the tv off, the cartoons go on playing.

Izaya, somewhere, even now, doing something, thinking of someone, and not just paused and waiting for Shizuo to chase him. Izaya, a whole miserable life in another district, and he might have knives, and he might have teeth, but the world’s jaws are bigger.

    Summary

'"It's funny, isn't it?" Shinra says. "How the four of us gravitate towards one another. Me, you, Celty, Shizuo-kun. And all of us monsters."

"You're wrong," Izaya replies, narrowing his eyes. "Shizu-chan and your headless girlfriend are the only monsters here. Me and you, we're not."

Shinra just smiles serenely. "Izaya, we're the biggest monsters of them all."'

    Bookmarker's Notes

This worked so much better when they were younger. Shizuo and Izaya would try to kill each other, Shinra would patch them up while laughing at how idiotic his friends were and occasionally complain that he was bored of having to fix them all the time, Celty would attempt to talk some sense into them to no avail. That was how it went.

Now, the easy, age-old routine has given way to something more violent, something that runs deeper than even Izaya in all his pseudo-omniscience thought possible.

Izaya looks at them, empties his heart, and then there's nothing but the too-quiet click of the door behind him.

Shizuo had always known that Izaya was a lonely person. Maybe he just hadn’t ever considered how lonely a person could really be.

Shizuo wonders if watching someone so closely might be a side-effect of loving them. He doesn’t quite catch the connotations of that right away—that Izaya is also watching him, studying him, never keeping his eyes away for so long that Shizuo completely forgets the sensation of them burning patterns in his wounds.

Orihara would say: 'Everybody bled for something, didn't they?'

His nightmare would say to him: 'What an interesting twist. People don't kill people for their friends. Not even their best friends.'

To which, Mikado's dream-self would counter, 'Maybe I just hate you.'

'Or maybe,' Orihara would singsong, so different from when Kida does it, so airy and knowing and ominous, 'just maybe, someone here is a little bit in love.'

    Summary

‘Can you?’ Shizuo's arms are trembling with the fatigue of restraint, and Izaya might never be graced with such humanity again. ‘Can you...take it. Izaya. Tell me you can take it.’

For all of Shizuo’s honest violence, Izaya is pulled towards him for what he can see beyond that— Shizuo is so simply and painfully but a man. It's what makes him the fiend he is, and so Izaya leans forward, perilously close, looks into Shizuo’s eyes. ‘Can you?’

    Bookmarker's Notes

There's a dream Shizuo has over and over. All of Ikebukuro, empty and quiet, and just Izaya and him, staring at each other without a word. Just like that one evening when Izaya shut his fucking mouth for once and looked at Shizuo.

And Izaya is back the next morning, sitting across Shizuo at the sushi bar, and Shizuo says 'you look like you stayed up all night crying over me', and Izaya says 'you look like I stayed up all night crying over you.' It's the last time Shizuo lets him into Ikebukuro peacefully, and the last time Izaya feels like going peacefully.
