“Family is… hard.” He murmured and rested his chin on his knees.
Kanao thought of Shinobu, and how she locked herself away after Kanae’s death and emerged a new person with a guarded smile who was twice as distant. She thought of her birth parents and how they left her with nothing, not even a name.
“...Yes.” She hummed.
Zenitsu let out a breath and splayed himself out against the grass, staring up at the night sky.
“Why did you become a demon slayer, Kanao? Why do you fight demons?” He whispered.

Summary
Kanao and Zenitsu have been a pair for as long as they could remember. Forever intertwined, two sides of the same coin. They were siblings, not by blood but by choice. Just the two of them were enough.
But...
“It’s always been us against the world,” Zenitsu whispered as he took Kanao’s hand in his. He was looking fondly at their friends in the distance as Aoi hit Inosuke and Genya on the head again. Tanjirou laughed as he tried to calm the three of them down, and Inosuke responded by pulling all four of them into the pond, clothes and all. Zenitsu smiled and she could see his eyes softening. “Maybe this time it doesn’t have to be.”

Summary
Maybe, if Zenitsu was just a little braver, he would have charged forward without hesitation and severed the demon’s neck. Maybe, in another world, everything that was soon to occur would have never happened because the demon would have died then and there.
Unluckily for Zenitsu, this wasn’t that world.
