    Summary

When daemons hatch plans to seize power for themselves and transform the lives of creatures across the country, vampires and witches are left to unite against them. The only problem? They're mortal - well, immortal enemies.

Doctor Merlin Emrys, a powerful witch, only learns of the daemons' threat after a chance meeting with Arthur Pendragon, a vampire who was turned after the infamous Battle of Camlann.

To achieve peace among all creatures, they'll first need to get along themselves; so when Arthur threatens to drink Merlin dry, and Merlin conjures magic that could kill Arthur, things don't look so good for the two of them.

Vampire Arthur/witch Merlin. 🧛🏼🧙🏼 Modern AU with daemons as third kind of creatures living among oblivious humans. Everyone is reborn as a creature (in case of the vampires at some time during the centuries); only Arthur is still the original, now immortal king (turned into a vampire the day he died in Camlann). 🤴🏼 As a vampire Arthur has both a conscience and a beast inside him (with the former not always winning, he kills - though unintentional - a man); as sire of the Pendragon Clan he deeply cares for his vampire children Percival, Gwaine, Morgana and Leon. 🧛🏼 Over the centuries Arthur has been a tragic figure, loving and missing the original Merlin who hadn't reciprocated his feelings (even abandoning Arthur at Camlann); after meeting the modern Merlin (a descendant of the original) he finally gets a happy ending with a Merlin who loves him back. 👬 Vampire Arthur is intriguing (hot + cool, ethical ambigous + compassionate, commanding + vulnerable) and the enemies-to-lovers romance has good dynamics (although I'm no Merthur fan I found it sweet). Therefore - and despite the highly questionable backgound ethics (blood drinking is abuse, after all) - I enjoyed this story.

A BBC's Merlin review, in which I argue that this show most closely resembles Uther—not Merlin or Arthur—in ideas, form, and function.

An excellent analysis 👍 of the shortcomings of "Merlin": the concept of destiny as determinism depriving the characters of their freedom to choose; the increasingly absurd delay of the magic reveal; the unfulfilled prophecies; the denial of logical (and satisfying) development to the characters; the dubiousness of the mentor figures Kilgharrah and Gaius; the creators' betrayal of their own premise (to tell the story before the legend starts) and their inadaquate adaptation of the legends once Arthur is king (leaving both Arthur and Merlin as failures in the end). The reasons behind these shortcomings is the unwillingness (and the cowardice) of the creators to ever take a step beyond the initial set-up of the show: Arthur is forced to be forever unknowing, Merlin and his magic have to stay in the shadows. Unsurprisingly I like chapter 6 about Arthur the most: The creators have to knock him out, keep him in ignorance and don't even dare to give him Excalibur since his potential is so great that he would change everything if he wasn't controlled and blindfolded till the bitter end. Thus he is the most tragic figure in the show, denied to become the legendary king he should have been - and would have deserved to be (as the glimpses of his greatness the creators allow in the show prove). 👑

Arthur had no idea what he was thinking, adopting a child. Especially a crazy one. Arthur had enough issues on his own.

An excellent story 👍 with an unusual, fascinating turn on the reincarnation theme. Everybody is reborn, though the age differences and the relationships are in some cases altered - and only Merlin, 8 years old, remembers the past (though he has lost his magic). Arthur, aged 28, adopts the boy and they once again become an inseparable team - very different than in their past lifes in some regards, and still entirely Arthur and Merlin in others. Merlin is a very believable mixture of a grumpy, tired and scared old man and a weird kid troubled by memories he is often unable to deal with adequately. Arthur is adorable as single parent determined to get everything right (and not only getting the love of his son, but a lot of embarassments, insecurities and self-doubts in return, too, as parenthood goes...) 👨👦 And although there is only everyday life and there are no fights, death threats, dangerous enemies or dark schemes, Arthur is still a hero - as an environmental scientist fighting against global warming. 🤴 Excellent!

Arthur can't let things lie any longer. It's gone on too long already. This is going to take drastic measures, but with a bit of strategic thinking, Arthur's confident in his ability to make his best friend smile.

Fix-it of 5-5 "The Disir". Arthur makes a three stage plan to make Merlin smile again and is willing to go to extremes to achieve the goal - giving Merlin two heart-warming hugs and even listening to him! 😉🤗 Funny, sweet, a bit sad and very moving interactions between Arthur and Merlin. Arthur is determined to be a good friend and has the wisdom to get things right. And the happy ending (Arthur allows magic to return to Camelot) is much more satisfying than the illogical and disappointing original ending. 👍

Sometimes it's little things, in all the mortal peril, that turn a friendship on a new path. This is one way it might have happened, and it starts with Arthur breaking his leg.

Hurt Arthur/comfort Merlin. 🤕 Arthur's broken his leg and gets desperate when it doesn't heal. Worried for his people when he isn't able to protect them, Arthur decides to use magical help - and asks Merlin to kill him, should he be corrupted by the magic. Honourable Arthur: Determined to protect his people he is prepared to sacrifice either his honour/pride or his life. 🤴 Heartbreaking Arthur: He really thinks Merlin would kill him since Merlin doesn't care about him. 😥 Merlin heals him with his magic, of course, but - interesting enough - without revealing it. Physical and emotional hurt/comfort. Good!
