Summary
The first time Eddie Diaz met Evan Buckley, they were in the middle of a warzone. The SEAL was pressing a hand to his side, trying to block a steady pour of crimson and demanding Eddie find some way, any way, to just keep his innards in place while he gets them out of there. Several hastily administered staples later, he’s watching as the man takes down insurgent after insurgent, bare hands bruised and bloody after his gun jams, until they reach the extraction point. Even then, he doesn’t fall like most men would, instead letting his lips curl into a grin that sends a shiver down Eddie’s spine.
In that moment, he’d known the man was dangerous.Which is why, six years later, when that very man walks into Station 118 as their new recruit, Eddie knows they’ve got a problem, because how could he ever trust someone like that to watch his back?
Little does he know the SEAL was nothing more than a broken boy desperate for a place in the world, or that he would be the one to heal Eddie’s own tormented soul.

Lawsuit/Grocery Store AU.
“You haven’t seen Christopher in weeks!” Eddie spits. “Do you know how much he asks about you?”
Buck blinks back tears; guilt and anxiety and self-loathing eating him up from the inside. “Eddie…” He doesn’t want to hear this – can’t – but the other man doesn’t seem to be in any mood to stop.
“How could you?” Eddie continues, oblivious to the way Buck is now shaking. “You’ve been doing nothing but ignoring me!”
Romeo whines beside him, tugging on the lead in an attempt to pull Buck away from the situation, but the man’s feet are frozen to the floor. Letting out a sharp bark directed at Eddie, Romeo turns, raising his front paws and placing them gently on Buck’s thighs.
Maybe it’s the sudden height of the animal, but Bobby’s gaze drops, taking in the luminescent coat around the animal’s body. Eyes widening slightly, he quickly throws a hand up onto Eddie’s shoulder, squeezing tightly and pulling the man back. “Eddie.”

Summary
Post-Lawsuit. Evan Buckley never had divulged much of his past to the 118. Isolated and alone, he heads back to Chicago; to the name he abandoned, family he left, and partner who never once gave up on him. Returning to the CPD is like riding a bike, allowing him to put the ghosts of LA to rest. Then a joint case with NCIS: LA brings him back in touch with those who once gave up on him, and they witness a side of Evan Buckley that they never knew existed.

He just doesn’t understand.
He supposes it’s been a long time since he and the team really talked – what was it, 10, 11 months now? – and even though things had felt like they were getting better, it’s still kind of hard to suddenly say “oh, yeah, I’m married by the way?” and harder still to add “also, I’m a Dad?”
So it had kind of just lingered, time stretching further and further. But it wasn’t like he’d been hiding it either – that’s what he doesn’t understand.
He’s talked enough about Jay and the twins – wasn’t that why Eddie had blown up at him in the first place? – has filed the paperwork, even changed the name on his turnout.
Now he knows they just don’t look at him anymore, don’t listen, and… he gets it.
He does.
