He does not know if there is a heaven, has never seen a light or felt a warmth or really been aware of much beyond waking up after death, but if there is, he thinks it would be like this. He thinks it would smell like baking bread, corn chowder cooking on a gas stove, and the spicy remnants of aftershave. It would feel weightless and anchored, ethereal and solid, like the burning press of fingertips at the small of his back and the heavy rumble of laughter in his chest. He thinks the fires would be kept alight on the fuel of loving so completely you do not know what to do with the excess.

All this to say, he was used to going out for the night and finding at least one person’s number scrawled on a napkin and stuffed into his jeans pocket when he got home. If they got drunk enough, he and Buck would even make a game of it. What he wasn’t used to was the classic “hey handsome” dripping from his best friend’s lips in a sultry sort of way that means Buck is either way more drunk than he’s letting on, or he’s fucking with Eddie.

Summary
Eddie gets home and everything feels distinctly hollow. It’s a small house, and full of knick-knacks that paint a picture of the family living there, but he feels the weight of its emptiness deep in his gut when he’s there alone. He tries to distract himself by cleaning up around the place, a task that had somewhat fallen to the wayside in the past couple of weeks, that cyclic way that housework has. Really, there are only so many things that one man, with the weight of his world bearing down on his shoulders, can juggle on his own.

Chimney is going to break. He really is. He loves Maddie, he would die for her, he would probably kill for her, and he is so grateful that she feels safe enough with him to share the hard parts of her past, but he never wanted to know this secret. Not least because it involves Buck, and Chimney has to see the man practically every day and just not tell him this huge, life-altering thing. So, yeah, Chimney is going to break, and the way he’s been trying to pawn the secret off onto other people means it’ll probably happen sooner rather than later.

The look Nicky gave him as he was led to the plane seemed to pierce straight to his soul, and he didn’t seem to like what he found there. “We are usually a better a judge of character,” he said, in a tone that was a lot more ‘I’m not angry, just disappointed’ than James would have expected under the circumstances. “I suppose you are taking us to the person who paid for your betrayal.”
“It’s a nice plane,” Joe said with a sardonic look. Of course they thought he was doing it for money. It was a reasonable assumption. Now didn’t seem like quite the moment to correct it.
“There’s a TV, Joe.”
“Champagne?”
He hadn’t met Joe and Nicky before. If he were honest, this wasn’t how he had imagined it going.
