Summary
Vi throws an arm around Caitlyn’s shoulders, pulling her in until their faces are only inches apart. She flashes a suggestive grin, “I wouldn't even think of doing anything less than the best for you, cupcake.”
When Caitlyn pauses, Vi worries for a moment that maybe she was too obvious.
But then Caitlyn chuckles, it's low and inviting, reaching her hand up to cup Vi’s jaw, pulling them even closer. They’re nose to nose and everything about Caitlyn is overwhelming her senses. The melodic sound of her laugh. The gleam in her eyes that makes Vi feel transparent. The tingling sensation in Vi’s jaw that stroking fingers leave in their wake. The smell of old books and the coffee she just drank.
Would she taste like that too?
“Of course, I know how eager you are to please, darling” Caitlyn coos at her. She strokes her thumb lovingly across Vi’s jaw again.
Fuck.

For a split second, Caitlyn was on the receiving end of her own rifle, because suddenly seeing the silver of Vi’s eyes once again — the bullet careened straight through her, tearing apart her insides and blowing out the sticks and glue she’d used to piece herself together. From the wreckage of herself, the debris and rubble lying on the floor, rose up a fragment, a memory.
A nightmare.

“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”*
Half a decade into Vi's stay in Stillwater, a topsider turns up, raving about being a Councillor's daughter.

Vi climbed laboriously to her feet as well, stifling a gasp as pain lanced up her spine, settled in the back of her head like a disease. She’d really broken that rib, huh? But Caitlyn was sweating now, wobbling on her feet—one of them needed to keep their heads. Vi had endured several broken ribs; this was nothing new.
Nothing new.

Or, during a romantic vacation, Caitlyn proves she sucks at bouldering and crashes down a cliff. Vi tries to get her home safely, but there's a problem: Vi definitely snapped a rib breaking Caitlyn's fall. It may have also punctured a lung. Breathing is getting kind of hard.
But it's fine. Vi's fine.
(She's not fine.)
