After an unexpected call which turned out to be Joanna, somehow having gotten a hold of Jocelyn’s comm and accidentally dialing him, the briefest moment hearing his baby girl’s voice before the connection went dead, he was already in a sour mood and wanted nothing more to be left alone to wallow for a while.
And of course, that’s when Kirk found him.
He cuts the kid off mid-sentence, putting a halt to his ramblings about a “night on the town” with a low and livid, “What do you want from me, kid?”

Summary
It’s like the old proverbs say: it’s lonely out in space.
His captaincy is lonelier than he could have imagined, and changes happen so fast. In the blink of an eye, years have passed and they’ve gone from solar fire-- the crew that did the impossible and beat all the odds-- to repetitive milk runs and the steady, stalwart duties of a Starfleet flagship. More than a little drunk, watching Jim laugh his way through a story of some prank he’d pulled on his brother as a kid, the way his mouth moved when he spoke and his eyes crinkled at the edges when he smiled, Len couldn’t stop himself from blurting out: “I love you.”
Jim stopped mid-sentence, turning to face Len as his expression shifted from nostalgic mirth to something softer, a little uncertain.
“Yeah?” he replied, his tone hopeful as he tried to maintain his lighthearted smile.
Len shifted on his elbows and looked up at Jim where he sat, his own smile widening as he responded, “Yeah.”
