“One day I’ll just leave you up there,” Chuuya promises, collecting his knife as Dazai coughs up half a lung behind him. The noose still rests around his neck, skin turning blue and black underneath.
“You should,” Dazai replies, his voice all scratchy and hoarse.
“I should,” Chuuya echoes tonelessly, even as he waits for Dazai to stagger to his feet. The bitter truth is, much as he thinks that one day he will just walk away without cutting Dazai down or calling Mori, he won’t. He will always fish him out of a river, pull him back from a ledge.

Summary
The first time Nakahara Chuuya steps between Dazai Osamu and a potentially fatal bullet, he's fifteen and doing it because Mori'd have his head if Dazai gets himself killed. Nearly ten years later, Chuuya finds himself surprisingly protective of his former partner, but for a different set of reasons.
Aka Dazai gets hurt, Chuuya tries to make sure he doesn't die, and somewhere inbetween they figure out they don't actually hate each other.
