    Bookmarker's Notes

I'm a sucker for an alternate reality/mirrorverse fic, and even though it's a darker take on the Mario series this doesn't strike me as needlessly edgy. Tonally, it feels quite similar to Paper Mario or the Mario & Luigi games so far, and even though my knowledge of Mario lore is pretty limited, this has done a good job of not alienating me while obviously remaining faithful to the material it's adapting. Very interested to see where this goes. Will update bookmark when I've read further.

An absolutely phenomenal spin-off of an absolutely phenomenal fanfic, tailored specifically to my very personal interpretation of my favorite IDW Sonic character. I’m honoured to have had a hand in shaping this masterpiece.

    Summary

11763222 light years from Earth is a planet called Mobius.

A world where nature and magic coexist with science and technology. Legends talk of the power of Chaos that binds it all together, a power that- if harnessed- can bring down civilisations.
Or spark a light of hope.
They’re just stories, of course, as far as most of Mobius’ people are concerned- unaware that shifting Chaos will soon change the face of the planet once again. The hero of this story is just as oblivious.
Of course, every hero’s journey begins somewhere…

    Bookmarker's Notes

Right off the bat, this feels authentically like StC, but a more mature, refined take on it. It feels like Fleetway by way of IDW, or post-Super Genesis Wave Archie, and it's got the kind of love that only a committed fan can bring to the table.

Solidly written, gorgeously illustrated and beautifully realized by one of the brilliant minds behind the online continuation of Sonic the Comic, this is such an obvious a labor of love that even the tiniest little details like the background characters and objects help cement it in the setting it's building, though never to the point of detracting from the main story or characters. This is a Sonic story first and foremost, and it nails everything that the earliest Western takes on the character could never quite get down right.

Whether you're an StC afficionado or not, I cannot recommend this enough. Like any good origin story, you don't need any existing knowledge of the setting to appreciate this for what it is.

Title says it all, I guess...

Also, when I refer to Fleetway Sonic, I'm refering to the Sonic from Fleetway Comics, not the crazy super form. I'll probably get more into that in later chapters.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Started reading this on a whim, went in with low to no expectations, ended up having to take a break because I was laughing too hard, and now I'm eating a big slice of humble pie because I could not have been more wrong about this and I'm honestly a little annoyed I didn't start reading it sooner.

I usually want nothing to do with these kinds of works because they're usually cringe-inducing fluff (no, not that kind) with no thought given to characterization and characters that I care a great deal about being reduced to punchlines, but once you get around the format- because to be honest, it is a little hard to digest at first- it just oozes charm. The characterization that's conveyed through this shorthand style of presentation is genuinely impressive, and the premise is actually a little misleading in that regard.

The summary does it a disservice by making it seem like it's just an off-the-cuff thing for the sake of funsies, but the writer obviously cares a great deal about these characters and is taking pains to show that. It's got to the point where I don't need to even read the usernames of the participants in the conversation because I can tell exactly who is being written just by dialogue alone, and that is no small thing. It's also weirdly realistic in the way it's presented, which is a little unsettling but also very impressive when you remember the subject matter and the characters who are being dealt with.

Highly recommended, especially if you want a good laugh.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Stunningly well-written, with razor-sharp dialogue and compelling narration that never lets itself be bogged down by references to canon. Accessible for someone who only has an intermediate familiarity with the series, but a real treat for longtime fans. Cannot recommend enough.
