Her grandmother had long left this Earth, but still, the sadness in her voice echoes in Utahime’s thoughts every now and then.
It appears to be more deafening today.
‘But it can also bring two people destined to be together, in this life and the next.’ Utahime’s mother would quickly pipe in, her voice rising an octave higher whilst throwing her grandmother a discreet glare, gently tugging on Utahime’s hand beckoning her to stay at her mother’s side as if that will save Utahime from her fate. Her mother’s reassuring words fell into deaf ears, ‘What you have is a soul mark, it ties you to the one you will love for the rest of your life.’
Utahime compared it to cattle branded for slaughter.
