Summary
Jee's life. Zuko's rule. Sokka's chiefdom. This is a story of seemingly opposing forces--life and death, love and war, old and new--that all exist on a continuum of dance and song.
_____There is an old fisherman’s port that sits on the furthermost island away from the Fire National capital. For decades it bears no name. Sailors and merchants coming and going call it all manner of things: ‘The Quiet Wharf’, ‘Old Maid’s Harbor’, ‘The Port of Wood Rot’.
It’s the last that sticks the longest and so it stays. Wood rot. Woodrot. Woodrott. The wooden piles that hold its pier together had long ago turned gray, their splitting grooves riddled with the warts of barnacles. The village of tin shanties bears the soul of an old man. Sensible, for old men born here tend to die here, wind-dried or pickled, and so it is fitting that the air smells of salt and vinegar and neglected things.
To Jee it smells like home.

Summary
"Prince Zuko," Iroh began, but the prince wasn't having it. He stormed away, not sparing his battered sparring partners a glance (he'd already bowed at the end of their match, anything else was unnecessary). Before he knew it he was in his quarters, flinging sparks from his fingers and hissing steam. When that passed, he aggressively lit his meditation candles and tried to calm down. It was difficult because unlike combat meditation came easily, which added insult to injury. Gentle flames licked the air and formed in his palms as well. They were warm and soothing, unlike how fire was supposed to be. Instead of stinging his skin with small burns, the flames numbed the scraps on his palms and the aches in his joints. He knew that by the time his meditation ended he would feel invigorated and new.
His heart burned with shame; no wonder father had discarded him. There was no greater disgrace than having a son who was a healer.

inspired by @ashes-and-starlight's thing about zuko being a pirate and every other fic along the lines of that:
.
.
“I…I’m going to find the avatar.”“But the avatar isn’t there anymore.”
“I’m gonna try! He’s a criminal of the state.”
“A person who has disappeared off the face of the earth for the past 100 years, last noted to be from an extinct nation, is someone you’ll look for?”
“.....yes?”
Uncle has a look on his face. It’s like disappointment, but it also looks like he’s trying not to laugh.
.
.
.
or, zuko pulls his shit together much more quickly and iroh's still along for the ride. just. a little more passive aggressively. featuring a (pirate) crew consisting of a lesbian wine aunt, a scary looking softie who cries when he sees small animals, a cranky but well meaning healer, and all sorts of other misfits:) -

Summary
What if Zuko actually DID get himself adopted by a Nice Earth Kingdom Family?
And also everyone else he ever meets. Because lets be real, he is incredibly adoptable. Even if that means that by Fire Nation Law, the Fire Sages have to update the Royal Familytree every ten-or-so minutes.
At least succession s guaranteed now, right? In which everyone has a grand 'ol time except Ozai, who somehow lost his rightful place as Fire Lord to an Earth Kingdom peasant after banishing his useless son, and Jee, who has to deal with being adopted by a Great Spirit (and also the rest of the madness. his prince keeps getting adopted by people. this is a problem).

Summary
Iroh accepts, mournfully, that it's going to be a long, long time before Zuko ever feels safe again. If Zuko ever feels safe again. Because of that, because Iroh thinks he already knows the reason for his nephew's silence, he doesn't look closer at just how quiet Zuko has been since waking.
Iroh should have noticed.
He wonders, later, if this, too, is his fault. If something he said while his nephew was still drifting, barely aware of his surroundings, had struck deeper than he meant it to. If even something as simple as a well-meant shh, Zuko, shh had a hand in this.
If Iroh had somehow taken his original mistake and deepened it, rather than trying to make up for it.
(If this is the shape of the scar that Iroh left on his nephew).
