Summary
For twenty years Jiāng Chéng has lived by a simple code. Keep his sect and nephew safe at any cost. All else is secondary.
For this he has borne pain, humiliation, grief, fear and rage. He’s given up every want and hope he ever had. He no longer knows what is left for him with his sect stable and his nephew in power. Being made Chief Cultivator after Lán Wàngjī stepped down only heightens his unease, as he is now forced to care about other sects too. Why should he care for them when they tried to hurt his sect so many times?
His distrust seems correct when some of his disciples go missing. His spy-master tries to find them, something Jiāng Chéng should be fully involved with – if he were not distracted by another problem.
It would seem he has acquired a passenger – another thing invading his body. His doctors cannot kill it, cannot even identify it, but it’s alive and it’s growing. If they can’t remove it it will kill him – but Jiāng Chéng refuses to ask anyone for help, not even Jīn Líng. He certainly doesn’t want Wèi Wúxiàn to offer his ‘help’ because the consequences are unthinkable.
Jiāng Chéng has always found a way to keep going, he will find one more before this thing kills him.

Summary
Jiang Cheng goes back to the Burial Mounds after the siege. He finds a ruined settlement and a feverish child. Then Lan Wangji turns up, half dead himself, and Jiang Cheng is not prepared for any of this. He takes them both back to Lotus Pier, because he's not leaving anyone to die on his watch, and they both need medical care.
Then they just end up...staying. At least Lan Wangji is as unimpressed with the situation as Jiang Cheng is.

Meng Yao remembers something from the past....an arrangement between the Jiang's and the Wei's made when the two men were just babies...Reinstating this arrangement is easy and it brings peace to all the leaders; especially Jiang Cheng.

An unplanned occurrence shakes him from the stupor that his life has become. But the dangerous thing about wakeful eyes is that they sometimes land on things that they weren't looking for.
