Theo was eight years old when the world ended.
Or maybe he was younger than that, really. Because the world ended for Theo Raeken in a doctors’ office.
He still remembered the pale green walls, the faded strip of wallpaper with little circus animals dancing around. The little plastic dinosaur on the shelf behind the doctor, a purple triceratops with chipped paint on the right leg.
He still remembered the wide open window, showing a sky so grey it almost looked mauve. Not raining or shining, just… dead. Flat. The world seemed quiet and thoughtful, somehow. Like even the weather held its breath as the doctors told Theo.
The doctor had called him Ted. Nobody ever called him Ted.
