At present though, Phil Burbank is 40, the year is 1919, and he is reminiscing about Bronco Henry in their special place.

He revels in his nakedness, physically and spiritually. Out here there is nothing to hide, nothing to pretend, and he feels the familiar mask slip; it feels so heavy, wearing it as often as he does. Henry had taken it off of him often before . . . with him gone, Phil feels lucky to take it off a few times a year. It cracks more often than that, try as he might, but removal is a rarity. He is beginning to feel he has become the very personality he had made to hide himself, like the real him is now a faint echo overwhelmed by the din of his carefully crafted persona. If he were to look upon his reflection in the waters like Narcissus, would he see himself, or the mask? -

What happened in the barn after cigarette kisses were shared, and Peter's ruminations the next day.
"Psalm 22:30: ‘Deliver my soul from the sword, my darling from the power of the dog’. For Peter, Phil is the tormenting dog. He is also the mentor, the victim, and the unexpected focal point of Peter’s attraction. Peter decides that, seeing as he is in control, he may as well satisfy his own desires tonight. Might even consider being kind enough to provide a last scrap of affection to Phil- father had wanted him to be kinder. The wounded man would be not unlike the rabbits- petted first, appeased with tender strokes and gentle words, then put out of his misery. In the case of the rabbits, Peter had killed them for their sakes more than his own. In the case of Phillip Burbank, Peter felt it was rather his and his mother’s misery that he was ridding, though he supposed there was a degree of mercy in ending a man who’s twisted heart was so full of grief and self torment and cruelty."

Out of all they had, Bronco's death robs Phil of the chance to have called it love. He wouldn’t dare call it that, now. He’s no lovestruck nancy boy and he certainly hasn’t gotten all hung up or bent out of shape about it. Still, in all his words spoken of Bronco, he's never let slip an unkind one. Maybe whatever they shared lies in that. Or maybe Bronco finally got to bind Phil at the legs and castrate him like an animal, like he’d always joked about doing. At the end of the day, it doesn’t change a thing.
