“What are you doing here?” Aang asked, a slight hesitation in his voice as he let his guard lower.
Before the firebender could answer, Sokka interrupted, “are you going to ask us to help save Zuko again?”
No one missed the flinch or the look on Iroh’s face before he regained his composure.
“No,” he shook his head, “rather, I’m here to return the favor.”
Iroh looked directly at Aang, then bowed, “it would be my honor to teach you firebending, young Avatar.”
or
Iroh ventures to the Western Air Temple after the eclipse to make sure Aang actually learns some firebending (and then joins the Gaang). Meanwhile, Zuko decides to actually give himself more time to think of a proper apology and delays his own arrival by a day.

One hundred years of propaganda is a hard thing to break. But watching the Prince of the Fire Nation, a child of just thirteen despite his title, refusing to fight his father and beg for forgiveness only to get half his face burned off is a quick awakening.
General Jurai's faith in the war has been wavering for years. He's turned a blind eye to refugees and allowed injured enemy soldiers to escape. A part of him has always thought that the Avatar would return, and restore balance. But now he's got the echos of the Prince's screams in his ears, the bleeding marks on his arm from his wife's nails as she held him back, and the soul-tearing fact that if he doesn't do something to stop this war, to stop the bonfire the Fire Nation has set ablaze, no one else will.
