Summary
As the last bell rang, his attention was captured by a thin boy with curly black hair and striking blue eyes heading toward his desk. Charlie Spring. He carried himself timidly, Nick noticed as he got closer. But even after seeing him, Nick still couldn’t pinpoint where he’d heard of him before, because he definitely did not recognize him.
Nick felt like he would’ve remembered him, had they met before.

Now ten years later, he's opening up a coffee shop and bakery. He puts out an ad for help to run his business when his longest and biggest crush, Charlie shows up.
Elle tells Charlie that Nick Nelson is opening up a bake shop and needs help with the coffee and business side of things. Charlie thinks it'd be harmless to check it out, he needs a job after all, and there's no way his crush on Nick would still be there a full decade later, right?...right?

“His name is Charlie,” he tells his mum when he gets home from school that afternoon. And then, upon seeing her confused face, he clarifies. “The kid I sit next to in form. And I think,” he says, moving into the kitchen and taking down a mug and a tea bag, “he must be in the year below me because I don’t remember ever seeing him around.”
“That’s nice, dear,” she says, before returning her focus to her tablet. And then, after a beat, in a way that Nick thinks sounds a little too casual, “It’s always nice to make new friends.”
His life has been steady for years now, firmly on the path that the universe has destined for him and he finds comfort in the rhythm. But there’s something, a nagging in the back of his mind, the ever present feeling that everything is about to change and he doesn’t understand why the feeling grows stronger every time he says hi to Charlie in the hallway or in form.
