“What do you think you’re doing?” Lan Wangji hisses, foregoing being polite, because what kind of police officer provokes a confrontation between a kidnapper and their four years old victim without even a warning?
He tugs on A-Yuan’s hand, already thinking of the strongly worded letter he’s going to send to whatever administration is in charge, but A-Yuan is rooted on spot.
“Please sit down, Sir” the policewoman gestures to the free seat in front of her desk. “There’s some explaining to do, nothing you need to worry about. And you” she narrows her eyes at the kidnapper, “I promise it won’t kill you, so do yourself a favor and try to behave for once in your life, else I’m putting you back in your cell.”
“I always behave, I’m behaving right now. How can I not behave?” the man whines, shaking his handcuffed wrists to prove his point. “You’ve got me tied up to a chair, Wen Qing! No sleep, no food, not even a coffee. The quality of service in this place is seriously awful. I’m giving it one star, you’re lucky I know you.”

Wei Wuxian frowns and pushes himself off the front desk. “I’m not! I’ve been here for like… a whole five minutes.” Wen Qing raises one, perfect eyebrow and tilts her head; her nose piercing catches the light and sparkles slightly. Now it's Wei Wuxian’s turn to hold up his hands and shake his head. “I’m serious! I just got distracted by the pretty flowers your brother’s secret admirer sent him.”
“Cousin,” Wen Qing says briskly, as she walks around the desk to lean over Wen Ning’s shoulder. “Can you pull up the schedule for today?”
Wen Ning does what she asks as Wei Wuxian blinks. “What?”
“Our cousin gave us the flowers,” Wen Qing continues, her eyes never leaving the computer as she pencils in her clients on her little pocket notebook. She likes paper lists, something Wei Wuxian doesn’t quite understand in the digital age, but they all have their own eccentricities. “Or, well, really his father brought them over as a welcome gift.”

Lan Wangji is really fucking tall. He’s wearing a soft blue button-down today, and his hair is tied back again, but he’s in socks and slippers. The socks have a cloud pattern on them. It makes him look strangely soft and vulnerable. It’s reassuring, to see that the Sexiest Man in the World wears patterned socks just like everyone else.
“Baba, Wei-laoshi is here!” A-Yuan says happily, tugging on his father’s hand.
“Yes, he is.” Lan Wangji dips his head in Wei Ying’s direction and gently steers A-Yuan back into the front hall. “Let’s step aside and allow him to come in. Wei Ying, thank you for making time in your schedule.”
“Ah, no need for thanks,” Wei Ying says airily, standing up again. “Money exchanged for goods and services, right? You’re paying me for it!”
