Some sound should have leaked through the leaves. More magic, Nie Mingjue scoffed.
There was a clearly visible path on the other side of the water— Baxia trembled on his back, eager to be used. But something told Nie Mingjue to stay out of the air; a whisper on the edge of his mind that he had long ago learned to pay attention to.
A dragon would have the advantage in the sky, even in a situation like this, Nie Mingjue thought. He paced the sandy riverbank, looking for a way to cross. The water rushed past in a rage of white, foaming intensity that he had no desire to experience firsthand— he knew how to swim, but swimming in that would be a death sentence.
“All this for a plant,” he muttered, annoyed.
