Summary
“I didn’t trust the people I was with enough.” It’s the crux of it, though not everything. Back then, David let himself be used, for his money, his status, his body, in the hope that he’d get some scrap of affection in return. He did a lot of things he’s not proud of. “It was harder to want to give up control.”
“And now?” Patrick murmurs, his breath hot on David’s ear. He traces idle patterns with his thumb on David’s arm.
David leans forward and picks up the collar again. “I trust you,” he says simply and he can feel Patrick’s lips curve into a smile as he presses a kiss to the spot on David’s neck that he long since claimed as his own.
David wears a collar. That's it, that's the fic.

Summary
The problem is how vehemently David hates pet names.
It would be one thing if he was just ambivalent, or if his ire was confined to one or two names—the most egregious, maybe, like baby or sweetheart, or the truly tacky like lover or cutie. But he’s never really done things by halves.
Or, David works through some big feelings.
