Casita is a pile of dust and rubble. The gifts are gone. Mirabel leaves, never to hurt her family again.

We don't talk about Mirabel.
That rule had been in place longer than Antonio had been alive, and was nothing new. It was simply too painful to talk about the child who disappeared one day without a trace, likely to die in the forest. Antonio knows the rule well, and he does not talk about Mirabel.
Antonio never heard anything against talking about his new BFF (best feral friend) Mariana, though.

Mirabel had always known that she didn't fit in her family.
She was a warped, mismatched puzzle piece in the familia Madrigal that stubbornly refused to click into place. No matter how much of herself she sacrificed to fit, trimming away at her imperfections, every bit of wrongness that plagued her. It left her unwhole and ugly, a stain on the Madrigal tapestry.

Across the globe, a villain declares to a Pro Hero in downtown Musutafu that he'll use his quirk to summon a random, innocent civilian to use as a hostage for his bank robbery. Too bad he didn't know his hostage would be a fiesty 15 year old girl from Colombia with a mean right hook.

Despite being a child, Antonio is not blissfully ignorant.
He sees his favourite prima in so much pain. For not having a Gift. For being completely ordinary. He sees how Mirabel is breaking with each passing day.
Instead of fearing that he too will become like her, Antonio decides that he does not want a Gift. He does not want to leave Mirabel, all alone in the nursery. He does not want to stay in a place where Mirabel is always sad and in pain.
