Summary
Quentin and his daemon save themselves, and as soon as they're strong enough, they run far, far away from everyone they once called friends. They believe they're unwelcome, and are too hurt and angry to want a welcome anyway. So they plan to vanish and start again, alone but for each other, convinced they can rely on no one else.
But it turns out running away is never that simple.

Summary
It’s Elliot's impassioned plea before the Grecian pantheon of gods that is the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Margo had managed to get the questers an audience with the pantheon, through methods which she had refused to disclose. Anytime someone, even Eliot, would ask how on earth she had done it, her only answer was a raised eyebrow and a quip that someone had needed to grow a pussy around there and do something to get their baby Q back.
Standing before the pantheon, everyone was more than a little worried about how this would all turn out - given their track record with gods and all - but it was for Quentin. They all owed it to him to at the very least try. And so they swallowed their fear, pushed it to the back of their mind, or stuffed it down and turned it into fire because if there was one thing the questers were entirely sure of - this was not going to be easy. Nothing had ever been easy for them and there was no reason to expect, at all, that this long shot of an opportunity would be any different.

Summary
Quentin stares at him, eyes wide. In times like these Quentin is almost stupid enough to believe that Eliot loves him back. ”You don’t mean that,” he scoffs.
“I do,” Eliot’s expression softens. “Getting magic back isn’t worth your life, Q. Not to me. Not to the others.”
“That’s a nice sentiment, El.” He says halfheartedly.
His gaze feels like it’s burning a hole into Quentin. “And if the roles were switched? If it were Alice or me deciding to stay at Blackspire? Would you just accept it?”
“That’s different, Eliot.”
“Is it? How? Explain it to me.”
He paused before responding this time. “It...It just is.”
The knowing look he got in return was enough to make him want to crumble.

Passing through the doorway was easy, once he’d decided to do it.
Confessing that he might have, probably, (definitely) killed himself- now that was hard. Walking away from the campfire, from his grieving friends, with Eliot’s voice lingering in his ears, THAT was hard. Even saying goodbye to Penny, strange as it seemed, took more willpower than he’s thought it would. But the actual doorway… nothing barred his path, no new threat jumped out at the last minute. It was just one foot in front of the other and then-
And then light.
Q post dying-in-the-seam walks through the doorway into the afterlife and comes out in the Physical Kids Cottage, several years in the past.
Or: immediately after visiting Plover’s estate, Quentin, Alice, Eliot, and Penny get a surprise from the future.

post 4x13 canon divergent (literally throw the whole fifth season in the trash)
would you trust in a light that you cannot see?
It is said, when you move on, that you go to where you are needed most but sometimes where you are needed most is exactly where you left in the first place.
While the Dark King has reduced the kingdom of Fillory to ashes, Eliot recovers from his wounds at the Mosaic Cottage, Margo is on the war path for her throne, Julia searches for her true purpose, Alice tries to fix everything she broke with a little help, Kady stands on the frontlines, and Quentin tries his very best to make it back home, but it proves to be more challenging than any warning could've predicted. Magic is unpredictable, causing disruptions and devastations across the universe and there is only one person who may be able to make it right.
Spoiler: this story will have a happy ending.

“So what? It’s not like we haven’t already accomplished the impossible! I brought back Alice when she was Niffin! Julia lost her Shade and got it back and became a goddess and lost her goddess powers and got them again! We killed Gods for fuck’s sake! Dragons are fucking real and they are mostly assholes! Margo has a fairy eye she can pop in and out any time she wants and yes, it’s as disgusting as it sounds! We resurrected a goddamn mummy, so don’t fucking tell me this is the end of me!”
or Quentin refuses to say anything during the Secrets Taken To The Grave session. He's not dying. Not now and not before a very long time.

Summary
There's a longstanding tradition of playing Death for high-risk high-reward stakes: power, immortality, bragging rights. In this case, they're playing for Coldwater. And Margo––HBIC and best goddamn Welter's captain this side of the Neitherlands––isn't going down without a fight. No matter who complains about her choice of game.
C'mon. As if they were gonna play chess for Quentin Coldwater's mortal soul.
