Summary
When the Dark Forest cats rose against the Clan cats, they were defeated. Or so the stories say...
What if Tigerstar hadn’t been defeated by Firestar? What if he had discovered a powerful magic, and used it to put himself back in power?
Enter Gideon, small orange ball of self-proclaiming hotness. Gideon spent her young life listening to her foster mother tell stories about the Clan cats. Now, she has the chance to join the Clans, and become a warrior herself. But during Gideon’s training as an apprentice, things don’t line up exactly as she’d hoped. Dark secrets start to unravel, and she’s forced to choose between loyalty to the Clan she’s always dreamed of joining, or loyalty to her newfound friends.

Summary
“Gideon,” replied Harrow, thoroughly bored of this interaction already and taking no pains to hide it. “There’s been a noise complaint about your social gathering, and as it is…” – she made a great show of checking the watch she didn’t own and therefore wasn’t wearing – “…ass and balls o’clock in the morning, I’m here to tell you to break it up and go to sleep like good little children.” She made sure to infuse ‘social gathering’ with the exact same tone of withering condescension she’d use to say, like, ‘debauched orgy’ or ‘World War II LARP session’ or ‘tea party with Ronald and Nancy Reagan.’
Predictably, Gideon ignored her. Instead, she slouched even harder and more bonelessly against the doorframe and held her hand to her face in an upsettingly decent imitation of the thinking emoji. “Ortus again?” she asked eventually, her tone carefully pruned of all discernible emotion.
“I take my role as senior resident of these halls of accommodation very seriously, as you well know, and it is my duty to investigate all complaints promptly and vigorously while protecting the anonymity of the complainant,” said Harrow officiously. “But yes, it was Ortus, because he is a big girl’s blouse.”

Summary
Palamedes, a decidedly matte person, is quite shiny when he smiles. His lambent gray eyes sparkle. His even white teeth gleam. His battered spectacles tilt on his face, unable to withstand the sudden movement of his nose, and their silver frames catch the light in an SOS flare. Camilla has a poor track record of being able to resist smiling back.

Summary
Harrowhark Nonagesimus and Gideon Nav both resent their lots in life, as the daughter of a Tyvian High Judge and the servant of that same High Judge, respectively. Harrow has exactly the kind of attitude you would expect: cruel, iron-fisted, and a little bit snobbish. But she also works secretly with the revolutionaries trying to restore the Tyvian Princes to their former glory. Probably because they promised her a throne or something. Gideon has been in the Nonagesimus' service since she was a year old, shortly before Harrow was born. With no family to her name, she's been groomed since she was a child to one day join the Operators, Tyvia's secret police, a destiny she absolutely loathes.
At least, until the death of Empress Emily Kaldwin. From old age, we'd like to point out. Still, without an heir to take her place, it changed everything. And the current regent has been having a time trying to find a proper replacement. So, he's invited some of the strongest candidates from all over the Isles to Dunwall Tower to be evaluated for the position. For some reason, he doesn't realize the potential risks of having everyone vying for the Empire's throne all under one roof. Go figure.

’It was then, of course, because Gideon’s life sucked balls and she should have never expected anything else, that the Reverend Daughter Harrowhark Nonagesimus stalked into the room.
“Griddle,” said Harrow, “how come you look like a particularly unfortunate boiled lobster?”’
Gideon Nav, a redhead whose experience of life has so far consisted of spending all her time underground slathered in paint, experiences her first sunburn at Canaan House.

Summary
“Gideon,” said Palamedes with the patience of a saint, “the rules are the rules. It wouldn’t be fair if I changed them just for you. In a well ordered society—
“It’s not a well ordered society.” Gideon knew where that was going, and she certainly didn’t have the time. She slapped a slip of paper onto the counter and said, “It’s secret santa.”
And there lay the source of all of her problems: handwritten in a script so neat and precise it could have been printed, Harrowhark Nonagesimus. And everyone knew that Gideon and Harrow hated each other.
So what if they had started taking smoke breaks together? So what if Harrow had helped her fold shirts just last week, in a store she didn’t even work in? So what if Harrow had laughed as the two of them did Jagerbombs at Palamedes’ Halloween party, the glint of her fake fangs flashing invitingly in the orange party lights? They hated each other. The two of them would both work in the mall until one of them inevitably strangled the other with her bare hands, and Gideon wouldn’t have it any other way.
Except that lately, Gideon had started to like Harrow.
Which made that slip of paper a fucking problem.

The game began the moment they heard the invitation. Would you rather spend an entire spaceflight listening to Magnus do his standup routine or be cursed to talk in only dad jokes? Would you rather lose the competition but win all the riches in the universe, or win Lyctorhood but never be able to go home again?

Summary
In Drearbrurh, the sight of a sword to Gideon’s head or a hand around her throat might have been cause for celebration. Hell, had Harrow both the opportunity and spine for it, she might have driven the sword through Gideon’s skull herself, an effective solution to the countless problems wrapped up in Gideon’s sloppy robes and sloppier face paint. Instead, Harrow pressed her outstretched hand into that vulnerable place at the base of Gideon’s skull, digging her fingers in tight to prevent them from lashing out.
Her own voice came unexpectedly, rising from some unknown depth. Harrow said, “Your cavalier drew on my cavalier.”
A Gideon the Ninth Chapter 7 rewrite, written from Harrow’s POV, because I am obsessed with this scene.
