Summary
Dennis was sad again. But that night, Mac happened to be there. And that night, Dennis happened to be open to talking, at whatever level.
—-
‘Truth be told, all Dennis wanted to do was watch as Mac walked off and turn around to see where he was going. He wanted to watch as his grossly muscular and bulky body lumbered away, what his annoying hands would touch next and how his ugly eyes would reflect the light as they looked left and right. And truth be told again, Dennis didn’t think his body was gross or his hands were annoying or his eyes were ugly, but that was a tiresome truth that Dennis couldn’t particularly be bothered to be preoccupied with that night.’

Summary
‘Do you really think you need it?’ Dennis talks over him, too loud. He stops right after, a look on his face like that wasn’t exactly what he meant to say. ‘I mean, like. Grindr. Do you really use it that much?’
‘You just told me I was using it too much,’ Mac points out, mystified.
Dennis bites his lip again. Mac wishes he’d stop doing that; it makes it so hard to concentrate on what he’s saying. Is he making his eyes big like that on purpose? Focus, Mac, for fuck’s sake.
‘Yeah,’ Dennis hedges. ‘I just meant, you know. Do you really need it anymore? Like,’ he surges past the question, twisting his hands in front of him like a child caught mid-fuck up. Mac could tell him he doesn’t need to be concerned; he has no idea what Dennis’s game is here.

5 times Mac is oblivious + 1 time Dennis is.

Summary
“It’s like this,” Mac explained. “Dennis has been kinda sad lately, you know? It’s… he has this thing, he calls it his God Hole, and he’s trying to use this kid to fill it up. But he’s way more dumber than I thought because he already tried that, and it didn’t work. And it’s so annoying because he still doesn’t realize that the person who’s gonna fill his hole is right in front of him.” He gestured to himself, just in case his point wasn’t clear. Charlie’s face lit up in realization.
“Ohhh, okay, that’s what this is about,” he said. “You want to fill Dennis’s hole.”
Mac coughed. “No, that’s— that’s not what I meant, don’t say it like that.”

Summary
You'd think life would be simple when you're trained to know when someone's lying to you, you'd think it'd take away all of the fears and questions about who you can trust but when you're forced to face the fact that you've lied to yourself for 14 years, you realise that reading people means nothing if you can't read yourself.

And it’s bliss, to just plunge the needle into his flesh and think “let me slip, let me slip, let me slip over this edge I walk every fucking second”. It’s a relief, and he cannot wonder why he does it, he cannot wonder if someone will fucking see, because he will literally break if he does.

Summary
And even now, Mac was trying to be enough for Dennis. So much of his energy was spent in the hopes that Dennis would give a shit about him. But it was dawning on Mac that Dennis would never be able to give Mac what he truly wanted.
Mac wanted to wake up, make a nice breakfast, and be able to give a good morning kiss to his boyfriend. Mac couldn’t have that with Dennis, he couldn’t have that here in this apartment.
Or: Mac moves out and Dennis isn't concerned at all, really!

She supposes some things cannot lie. She supposes there are things you can’t hide, like the dilatation of pupils or the tainting of her skin or slight hitch in her breath. Things that cannot be controlled or altered even with her capacity to bluff and lie (almost never to him).

Summary
Dennis had spent countless hours running through scenario after scenario in his head, trying his hardest to solve them with daydreams and algorithms. The solution he’d come to was simple: Provide just enough affection and emotional support to make Mac malleable and willing to do anything. And then give Mac everything he’d been wanting for the past twenty-something years and get everything Mac wanted to give him in return. His decades of carefully planned manipulation and expert psychological conditioning were about to pay off. So why, he wondered, was he so nervous?
