Summary
After nine happy months on Cardassia Prime, an unfortunate incident breaks the spell and starts to affect everything in Julian Bashir’s life- from his work, to his relationship, to his plans for the future. He decides to finally take a long-overdue vacation on Earth.
(A post-canon story about enduring friendships, healing, growth, commitment, and finding where you belong.)
CW: This story delves into Cardassia’s legacy of colonialism and violence, and the plot is kicked off by an incident involving xenophobia and mild sexual assault. It doesn’t happen during the fic, and is only described non-explicitly- but do mind the tag, because it’s referenced often. Chapter-specific warnings are also included.

Summary
The funeral was insufferably hot. Of course, it would be. Bashir wore all black, a mourning suit in the traditional Cardassian style that Garak had made for him years ago to attend his first state funeral as the Castellan’s spouse. He wondered if, in the back of his mind, Garak had known Bashir would someday wear it to this very occasion.
He was sweating entirely too much for such a somber event. The black fabric drew the heat of the suns, and he was beginning to feel lightheaded by the time they finally adjourned.
He sat on the steps of the funeral home, and Jeri brought him some cold water to drink and fanned him ineffectually with a floral arrangement. Smoke was rising from the crematorium.
He’s really gone.
***
In which Garak and Bashir never mended their relationship from the wartime wounds, rushed into a politically-motivated marriage, and broke each other’s hearts. Oh, and Garak fakes his own death. Don’t worry, the story does get happier.

Summary
(From the original fic)
Elim takes stock of the humans who stand before him. The two of them look like they’re about to fall asleep on their feet, and the woman seems to be heavily pregnant. They’re both running on fight-or-flight hormones, if he’s not mistaken, and likely to exhaust those at any moment. He finally lowers the phaser. He nods, and stands aside to let them enter. “I see we have a lot of catching up to do.”

Summary
For a moment he thought he must be dreaming. He shook his head vigorously, but the vision remained.
"I seem to have tweaked my shoulder a bit in the accident. Just some help loosening the laces, if you could."
It's a fucking corset. He's wearing a fucking -
"Of course," said Julian quickly, aware that he'd been too quiet for too long. He sat down behind Garak and untied the bottom of the laces, his surgeon's instincts allowing him to snap into action while his brain was still reeling.
It was plain - utilitarian. None of the decorations or accents that Julian had seen on his other pieces. Somehow, that made it even worse. He doesn't think it's sexy. It's just something he wears.
As the laces began to loosen, Garak rolled his shoulders and sighed a little in pleasure.

Garak, Bashir writes. I’m sorry for the delay in my reply. As I imagine it has been for you, the past eight months have been an exercise in survival for me. An exercise in which I have questioned myself what it means to do more than just survive. What it would mean for me to actually, really live. And I think I’ve finally figured it out. Or at least, figured myself out.

Summary
A selection of correspondence between Councilor Elim Garak and Dr. Julian Bashir, after the Dominion War.
My dear Elim,
I’m sorry to say the days seem to have slipped away from me. I think you’ll just have to settle for seeing me when I’m planetside. I hope you do forgive me. There were an awful lot of preparations, and I took the liberty of packing up some of the things you left in your shop. They’ve been in a cargo bay, so I can’t vouch for the condition of them, but I thought it was a shame for all that fine artistry to go to waste. I think this should reach you in plenty of time to get a response back before I leave, so do let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like me to retrieve for you. A data rod in the bulkhead, perhaps? I might even eat it, if you ask very nicely!
Yours,
Julian -

Summary
Eight years after the Dominion War, Dr. Bashir—rather afflicted, unfortunately—is en route to Cardassia Prime. Meanwhile, Garak has re-established himself as a politician of note, and his methods may be the source of more than a little friction. Furthermore, Garak's comrade-in-arms from the Cardassian Rebellion, Kira Nerys, is seeking to define a correct path for the tumultuous planet of Bajor. Ezri Dax, conversely, is struggling with her role in the Federation. The O'Briens are the two people suffering the least, and let me be the first to say, good for them.
Features an absolutely staggering amount of politicking, as well as periodic descriptions of alien ecology. Definitely a ensemble fic. You liked Martok, I hope?
CURRENTLY: Corpse retrieval road trip!

Summary
A year after the Dominion War, Dr. Julian Bashir goes to Cardassia Prime on a humanitarian aid mission. He finds a world still ravaged by violence and a plain, simple tailor trying to rebuild. The more he immerses himself in the recovery efforts and Cardassian culture, the more he begins to understand about Garak. Including one very obvious fact that, in retrospect, he should have realized the first day they met.
But it’s too late for that. Surely. Besides - they have a world to save. When the dust settles, maybe then he’ll have time for personal entanglements.
Then again, maybe waiting is a fool’s game…
