Winifred nods, a small knot of fear wending its way into her heart. He’s so…fixated on the Rogers boy. She swallows around the lump in her throat. Bucky is a good boy from an upstanding Christian family. He’s not like that. It isn’t possible - they’re raising him properly.
He’s just a confused little boy. He likes sports, and playing soldiers and cowboys with the other boys. He says all his prayers, memorized the Pater Noster, Ave Maria, and Gloria Patri, and he goes to catechism twice a week. And he’s bright, good with numbers like his father. He doesn’t try to play with his sisters’ dolls or dresses. He isn’t one of them. He can’t be.Five times Winifred Barnes suspected her son was one of those sort, one time she knew for sure, and one more time.

Summary
She awakes to the feeling of something dripping onto her closed mouth. Something… sweet? - with a hint of salt that she hopes is from her sweat. Standing over her is someone silhouetted by the sun. She’s blonde, Erin thinks, and holding two ice cream cones. She doesn’t think she’s seen a better sight in the world before.
“Hey!” The other girl says quickly, “I’m Holtzmann. You look like you were gonna burn, so I thought I’d come over here. I have this extra ice cream. Do you want one?” The entire passage is said in under ten seconds.
Erin blinks slowly. Then blinks again. “Huh?”

Sherlock presses his nose into my hair and inhales. “Told myself the whole way here we wasn’t gonna get into this again,” he says low. His breath moves soft against my scalp, and his words rumble deep into my bones. It sounds like the open sky throwing wind against the boulders up on Baker, rattling the thin walls of the tent with the rushing force of the mountain.
I hum. I don’t believe him for a second – steppin’ out of his gleaming white Ford back in Signal with his best shirt on and his curls all combed lookin’ up at me like he just took a breath after five years of holding it.
I know because I did the same.

“HERE, THE WORKER IS HONORED, NOT JUST A MEANS TO AN END.” -OBERGRUPPENFÜHRER JOHN SMITH, MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, S.1EP.6
The story is told in both the “present-day” (1960’s) and in a series of flashbacks (1930’s-40’s)
This story attempts to tell John Smith's backstory, including what might have contributed to John Smith becoming a Nazi. He starts out as any American male: decent family man; wanting to get on; former Army Intelligence officer (Captain). Then he becomes not just a Nazi, but a top-ranking Nazi in the Greater American Reich - why, and how? This story gives some of those answers, in a way that satisfies my burning questions.
Fans of the series should note that this was written between Season 2 and Season 3, and that I take some liberties with the Smiths' bios (particularly compared to the "official" bios from S3's "X-Ray"). Nevertheless, I hope those alternatives are believable. -

“It’s not your fault if those people weren’t prepared to grow with you." Steve's voice is slow and soft, like the first warm embrace of a summer breeze following a particularly cold winter. “And for those who don’t...well, fuck ‘em.”
Then, he feels it. Fingers, quiet and hesitant, pressing gently against his own. They linger only for a moment—
And then, they’re gone.

“Think you can stand for me?”
It seemed a peculiar question to Eugene’s feverishly wheeling mind, so he cracked an eye up at Shelton—who was frowning handsomely down at him, looking good enough to kiss despite his sweat-stained undershirt and dirt-streaked face, hair slightly matted from a few days’ lack of shower—and sighed exhaustedly, “Why?”
“Gotta get you down to the aid station,” Shelton explained. His hand was still resting possessively on Eugene’s back, his touch astonishingly tender against Eugene’s clammy, goose-pimpled skin. “Can’t have you dyin’ all alone in your rack a week before we ship outta this shithole for good, an’ that putain de docteur on duty got himself so busy with some inventory checklist he can’t be bothered with a house call.”
“Ain’t dyin’,” Eugene mumbled contrarily.
“Might could be,” Shelton shot back.

This is a story of small moments, and a story about stories, in different points in time. It's a love story, too, of a kind.
*
Freddie got up, shrugged, adjusted the strap of his bag on his shoulder, brushed non-existent dust away from his immaculate trousers, and started walking, confident that Roger would follow him.
Roger was left staring at his back. What on earth had just almost happened? Had he just almost – almost kissed his best friend? And had it seemed as though he might have wanted to kiss him back? And in a public place, too – in broad daylight – in the park? He froze in horror. What had come over them?
