Summary
Stevie’s an irreverent troublemaker, and David really should know better by now. But he went ahead with the cake idea anyway, because he fancied himself as the next Prue Leith. Now look where that’s got him - in a kitchen which currently looks like an explosion in a flour factory, with unwashed cake pans and bowls littering the counter tops around him, eggs on the floor tiles, and smoke in the air despite having the doors and windows wide open after that teensy-tiny fire he put out earlier.
Or, David makes a birthday cake for his husband, which doesn’t quite turn out the way he intended.

Which brings him to now, sitting on their back veranda where nothing but the occasional bird song can heard. The late afternoon sun has cast their yard in peachy pink hues warm and serene, the heady scent of jasmine permeating the air around them carried on a soft breeze. Patrick is lost in his own world, completely absorbed by the novel he’s reading giving David the perfect opportunity to study a profile he could sketch blindfolded.
In which a quiet afternoon takes a heated turn.

Summary
David had only been in the hospital overnight, but today was their anniversary. It was the worst timing.
It wasn’t serious, Patrick reminded himself. It was a broken leg, and they were only keeping him because he was 77. The bone had been set and braced. Rehab would be hard and long, but Patrick knew his husband. He would do whatever he needed to get back to work.

Summary
It was a good idea. Patrick worked Saturday mornings, then the two of them took a drive out to Elmdale to check on the second store. David alternated his mornings off with sleep and the gym, but then Alexis texted him and asked if he’d like to play parent for Charlotte’s Pottery with Parents summer camp.

Summary
The note fell over when he threw the covers off. He stood and stared down at it, hands on his hips. Without his glasses or his contacts, David had to squint to see the shape of the heart. Now it just looked like a sloppy circle.

Summary
David ate a strawberry and contemplated the box. It wasn’t big enough to hold a dinner set, but perhaps a teapot. A teapot would be a better gift for Patrick, though. He still used an ugly brown betty that they brought home after Grandma Brewer’s funeral, and it just refused to break (not that David had tried).

Summary
“In conclusion,” she said, clicking over to the last slide. It was a surprisingly good Photoshop of David and Patrick’s heads on a pap pic of Harry Styles and random guy friend out in the streets of LA. “That is why you two should take off the entire month of August, enjoy LA and each other, and leave the store to me.”
Patrick clapped. David grabbed his hands and stopped him.

Summary
“What?!” David covered his mouth, but it was too late. Patrick, in the chair beside him, jumped and reached out to grab David’s arm.
“Where’s the bear?” his husband asked. David twisted around to remove Patrick’s sunglasses and kiss his confused face.

This is year 50. This is also the last chronological story of this series. If you'd like, you can imagine David and Patrick lived forever. Or maybe they both died after a lovely session of lovemaking, physically asserting their love, and then passing silently in the night, maybe in a lovely set of silk pyjamas.

Summary
David poured Marcy more sangria, letting the chunks of plum and apple—from his own trees!—fall into her glass. Stevie was on her way back with more beer and ice, and Alexis promised she’d bring Charlotte after a nap, but for now, it was just David and his mother-in-law.

Summary
The lights were off except for two lamps on either side of the bed, both covered in red fabric that coloured the whole room. Patrick tried to take it all in. He hadn’t looked closely the last time he had been here. He hadn’t noticed the mirrors on the ceiling.
“Hold my hand, honey.”
Patrick reached out, blindly, and David found him in the dim red light. He laced their fingers together, their fingers with their wedding rings, and when Patrick finally got a look at his husband, that’s when he figured out what David had planned.

Summary
Patrick had a tomato soup on the stove. He stirred it gently, listening to the noon news, watching the tiny alphabet noodles peeking through red. They had fun pastas in the cupboard for the kids, but Patrick enjoyed indulging his husband, especially on days like today.

Summary
David’s anniversary present was hidden in Patrick’s gym bag—wrapped in gold paper, then again in plastic, just to be sure no gym bag smells could penetrate. He was pretty sure David had already found it; his husband had been staring at him with soft smiles when he thought Patrick wasn’t looking.
(Patrick was always looking.)

“Remember how you promised I could have the bathroom for an hour and how you would entertain yourself?”
“I remember.” Patrick nodded. David turned back to the mirror and his collection of little pots of goo. “One question first: why don’t I have any clean underwear?”

Summary
College seniors David and Patrick are project partners whose mutual insecurities make for a bumpy transition from friends to lovers. Banter, flirting, flirty banter, sexy banter, "connections."
